Worth noting that the ATC staffing shortage has been more than a decade in the making. I first became aware in 2023, when I ran a simple experiment & found the majority were working 6 days a week, mandatory overtime, sometimes for years. We desperately need to fix it.
KC-10 Driver ✈️ 👨‍✈️ B-737 Wrangler@MCCCANM

The question was simple: “Is it true you are working 6 days a week & can’t get spot leave?” The rules were that I wouldn’t ask if radios were busy, wouldn’t ask Tower (critical phase of flight) or below 10k’ (Sterile Cockpit rule). Here’s my tally: 2/5

@RonWaxman Imagine having an emergency in the sky and getting put on hold by your own company. The "no gates available" excuse doesn't really fly when there's an active fire risk. 🚒📵

Important note regarding the accident at LaGuardia Airport. United 2384 wanted to return to gate. Odor in back of plane. Pilot couldn’t raise anyone at United to help get him a gate. Air traffic controller tried to help. There were no gates. Pilot asked for fire truck. 1/2

@MME149212 The airport fire fighters are qualified ems. Unless they need a ride to the hospital they don’t need an ambulance

Sounds like the LaGuardia ATC had one guy working ground AND tower. That’s insane. Of all places, not there!

The first was for an icing light. The second was for an odor. He then took a wrong turn. No gate for him. Waited a few minutes THEN declared an emergency based on bad odor potentially causing FA sickness, forcing immediate gate assignment. Re: illness, he requested fire not medical services.

Two pilots are dead, 41 people are hospitalized. A passenger plane slammed into a fire truck on the runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York City. The aircraft, arriving from Canada, was carrying more than 70 people when the collision happened during landing. Authorities say the fire truck was responding to another emergency at the time. An investigation is now underway. Please keep their families in your prayers. This is devastating.

Our prayers this morning are with the families impacted by the ground collision at LaGuardia. The @FAANews is deploying a team to the site to support the @NTSB’s investigation. Here’s the information I can share are this time: -Last night, an Air Canada Express CRJ-900 operating from Montreal (YUL) and a Port Authority fire truck at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) collided at about 11:45 p.m. ET. -Of the 72 Air Canada Express passengers and 4 crew members, over a dozen are injured. Tragically, both pilots of the aircraft have passed away. At least 2 Port Authority firefighters sustained serious injuries. -LaGuardia remains closed until 2pm while the NTSB investigates the accident site. We will continue to work closely with the NTSB and share additional updates as soon as possible.

@SecDuffy @FAANews @NTSB You need to explore doing away with atc age limits. Hire older people and don’t force retirements so early.

@Turbinetraveler They are only saying pilots are dead. I wouldn’t be surprised if the fa is also and seat 1a, 2A, and 3a are also dead.

The extent of the damage is chilling when you compare it to the cabin layout. On CRJ-900s, the first two rows are occupied by the lavatory and galley, with a flight attendant positioned at the front jumpseat — exactly where the aircraft was catastrophically torn apart. The nose section is almost completely destroyed, with structural separation occurring right through the forward cabin area, highlighting just how severe the impact with the fire truck was.💔 Not even mentioning the damage to the cockpit area.🥹
