Tomorrow morning, the WMATA Board will be briefed with the latest update on the Blue-Orange-Silver Corridor Study, four years in the making. Over the past month, I have analyzed which proposal is best suited to address the system's capacity needs: (🧵)

@Aden_Yacobi @2024dion Even more extreme — the entire initial 83-station, 8-yard, 103-mile system was constructed at a cost of just under $10B in nominal dollars. Each of the blue line reroutes are projected at $25B+ ($40B for the BLoop)

@2024dion Costs were so low back then tho it’s crazy. Even tho dc’s metro saw large cost increases during its construction, final total for the initial system was as much as is now projected to cost the Bloop IIRC

There are now 35 US metropolitan areas with at least as many residents as the DMV had when they began working on the Metro

The revised FY27 budget proposal includes enhanced 🚌🚇 service, no fare increase, investing in modernizing our infrastructure all while keeping the jurisdictional operating subsidy @ 1.8%. That’s means more service while growing less than inflation! Great job team Metro.
Metro Forward@wmata

Metro continues to drive efficiency while investing in safety, frequency, and the modernization of America’s Metro System. Read more on revisions to the proposed FY2027 budget that will go before our Board for adoption next month. Full budget proposal ➡️ wmata.com/about/news/upl…

@Aden_Yacobi @KhyberSen Randy’s likely counter would be that CBTC can provide greater frequency (allowing more riders on existing tracks and reduces crowding). & platform screen doors would make congested platforms safer. Not sure if I fully subscribe but I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt

@dcadamb @KhyberSen Something Randy’s said before is that having the Farragut connection would free up capacity in metro center so I wonder to what degree that solves the issue

We now have a fuller list of priorities for new metro station entrances. Notice a big one that’s missing from here 👀
Randy Clarke@wmataGM

@joe5f6 Remember that Foggy only has one entrance and has even higher ridership than NoMa. Columbia Heights has large ridership and could use a south entrance. Farragut North-West is a critical missing link. And other regional stations have opportunity as well. Lots to do.

@Aden_Yacobi @KhyberSen They are similar solutions to address similar, but separate, problems. Farragut tunnel would reduce crowding on 🔴 between FN&MC (+save time on trips btwn NWDC & N Arl/Tysons). G St tunnel reduces crowding on 🔴 between MC&GP (trips btwn midcity & 🟠⚪️). Both lower dwell time @MC

@Aden_Yacobi @KhyberSen You raise good points — I agree that MC/GP tunnel should be lower on WMATA’s relative priority. Foggy Bottom east entrance, NoMA east entrance, Farragut tunnel, and Columbia Heights South entrance should each be explored ahead of that

@Aden_Yacobi @KhyberSen a) the unlucky who just missed a train, b) with sufficient mobility and c) impatient enough that they are willing to walk, it will reduce crowdedness in the aggregate. (With second order benefits like reduced dwell time, redundancy during track issues, better conditions at night)

@Aden_Yacobi It’s tough because the current layout of GP (imo, among the worst designed stations in the system) is what necessitates a walkway to Metro Center, but the layout is so bad, that any solutions require overengineering just to not exacerbate the existing shortcomings

@Aden_Yacobi I agree, but the rationale is that something is needed to divert passengers from the red line platforms (thinnest in the system and already crowded at rush hour/after arena events). Without an alternate path between the G/Y platforms and the new walkway to MC, crowds will worsen

@headwaysmatter 10 elevators, the most of any station in the whole system (including the station where passengers can only reach the platform via high speed elevators, the station attached to a 3-level multimodal transit center, and the station at an international airport w/ associated luggage)

@headwaysmatter The lowest hanging fruit is the agency’s interpretation of its own redundant elevator policy. Rather than simply requiring each station as a whole to maintain accessibility if a particular elevator goes down, it mandates double elevators between all individual entrance

@headwaysmatter I’ve become increasingly disillusioned about WMATA’s goldplated design standards. They aren’t simply misguided - it’s actively detrimental by making otherwise viable projects uneconomic

@headwaysmatter @SockDem_ @wmata Don’t forget $17M for a single elevator connecting the mezzanine to the street at an existing station (and not a particularly deep station). No property acquisition necessary and limited utility relocation

@SockDem_ @wmata The Ballston second entrance will be $177 million. North Bethesda (above ground!) will be $47 million. Potomac Yard was $50 million on top of the $325 million for the rest of the infill station.

@RayTrainToTrop And following this project, Arlington County is funding three additional entrances to various Metrorail stations in its jurisdiction (Crystal City, Ballston and Court House, each in varying stages of development at the moment). I hope those projects are more fiscally prudent 👀

@RayTrainToTrop Arlington County spearheaded this project and they were undeterred to throw good money after bad… all for a single elevator (of questionable utility) at an existing station. Honestly, it’s very depressing

The new elevator at Pentagon City Metro Station is finally open. The project was 40 months delayed and $11M over-budget from original projections
