Wildly, wildly disagree with this take… …staff lost a recruit. Shit happens. And while maybe you can’t necessarily blame them for the whiff itself, what you can blame them for is putting all their eggs in a questionable basket, when maybe they could’ve had a guy like Thiam earlier in portal season From the outside it appears staff has been a step late and overly picky the entire portal season—was the difference between Thiam and Diop worth the risk of landing where we’re at now? Everyone knew who Diop’s agent was, so the risk of getting leveraged against Gonzaga, which is exactly what happened, was always high…but the staff chose to put every egg in that basket any way and it backfired massively. The insistence on working out every player we’re interested in also slows the process, which hampered us in a portal that moved much faster this season than years past Why pass on a guy like Abdi Bashir, a guy who shot the lights out in the Big12 and was ostensibly happy with a sixth man role? The interim GM has been effectively useless, leading us to rely heavily on Euros At this point, with several holes to fill, and needing 2 more impact players the options are very thin, and everyone knows we’re desperate and will leverage that to get us to overpay or to squeeze more from other suitors like Diop’s agent did Only 18 of EvanMiya’s top-100 remain available, and that includes at least 2 whose destinations are known—Diop and Yessoufou—and the other 16 are guys we have never been seriously involved with at all. At 247 it’s only 10 of the top-100—they show Diop committed but not Yessoufou So yeah, if it was just losing out on Diop in a vacuum maybe you could give staff a pass, but the context in which this occurred is entirely a result of the staff’s missteps throughout this portal season. #sjubb
