@NielsHoven The "false choice" approach only works for people who don't realize that kids know the word "neither."

I used to use the “false choice” trick but what I’ve found more effective is “validate feelings, change behavior” Examples: “I can see you’re so so mad. But we still can’t hit people” “You don’t want to wear shoes? I know, it’s so hard when we have to do things we don’t want to do. Are you feeling pretty sad? Do you need a hug? Ok let’s get those shoes on.” “I can see you’re really upset. Yeah? I know, that’s so hard. But we still use our calm voice, even when we have really big feelings.” Works with coworkers too!

The trick to getting your young child to do anything without arguing is to just let them pick an option. You want them to put their toy away? Ask them “do you want it on this shelf or in this bin?” You want them to get in their seat? Ask them “do you want to climb up or do you want me to pick you up?” Literally anything can be made into two options and then they pick and do what you’d like with no arguing. It’s like sorcery.

All-in-all, though, I'm grateful it's around and understand this would be much more difficult (for my daughter and for her parents) if it wasn't.

A year ago I wrote a review of @MentavaInc and why I decided not to continue my subscription. Well, now I'm back, and I've given it another go with my now 4 y/o daughter. It's one of the best additions (maybe "the" best) to her early education.

I tried to teach my 3 yr. old to read with @MentavaInc. I'm a fan, but I cancelled after the trial. Why? In short, I thought the cost set up misaligned initiatives, where mine was to get my money's worth, and my daughter's was to go at her own pace.

Still thinking about that taxi driver in Italy who replied to my receipt request with "Sure, how many do you need"

@melissa @MentavaInc And a couple of interesting side effects: - My daughter now calls my foreign language workbooks "dad's learning game" - It's pushed me down the path of exploring alternative education paths for my kids

@melissa @MentavaInc I'll update my original review when we're a couple months in, but we plan to stick with it to the end. (Her younger brother also sits alongside and watches her "play," so we'll probably pick it up for him, too.)

this is a story of a ~month on mentava, the $500/mo toddler reading app fair warning, it's an off-the-wall perspective, as early literacy is lowish in our stack rank i picked mentava for the same reasons we picked climbing: failure is clear, impartial, and exacted in real time

@bendreyfuss The funny thing is, if you squint you can kind of see the train of logic he was trying to convey. Like "I felt so guilty about THIS, how could she have done THAT?" But it's so abrupt it instead reads like free association.

I'll almost certainly come back with my daughter when she's just a bit older, although we'll probably give Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons another go first.
