I was in a relationship with someone I won’t mention the years, but I left in 2022. Why? Because this person was emotionally and mentally abusing me. He was the one responsible for my bills at that point. I had no money, no skill, and when I told him I wanted to learn a skill, he said no. He told me not to learn anything that could give me all the money I wanted in life. He was a very big boy in Lagos. If you were on my Facebook around 2021/2022, you’d remember I was always posting him. But that’s bygone. I left the relationship because even in my lowest, my audacity has always been loud. I don’t get intimidated. I won’t allow anyone to treat me anyhow, even when I have nothing. I’m not like those girls who enjoy insults just because a man is buying them food or giving them luxury. I have two hands and two legs I can make my money myself. So, one day, I woke up and told myself, “I’m not doing this anymore.” Everyone thought I was stupid. My friends asked, “How will you survive?” Even the director of my IJMB center suggested that he would open a cigarette shop downstairs for me to sell to bike men because my school was opposite a bike station. He suggested I also sell ogogoro. Like everyone knew this guy was my helper. I just looked at them. Why were they worried about me? I made a decision, and that was final. Was it tough? Yes. It was one of the toughest decisions I ever made. There were days I didn’t eat for two days. I was broke, stranded. I left the relationship with nothing because I didn’t want to grow from scratch with something from that person. Around march then I remembered i still had his Facebook login. I left the relationship in February. By March, he was still pestering me to come back. Everyone was shocked I left a millionaire, but I didn’t care. When I logged into his Facebook, I saw a message from a lady in my church, a chorister in my choir at the time. She texted him, saying: “Don’t worry, she’ll come back to you. Her birthday is next month. She won’t see anyone to give her money for birthday shoots, so she’ll return. You know she loves birthday shoots.” Imagine. She was so sure I’d crawl back to him for a birthday shoot. And yes, the man believed it too. That day, I realized people really saw me as less. To the lady, I know you’ll read this post. Yes, I saw your message. That’s why I stopped greeting you. You didn’t ask me why I left. You assumed I’d go back for a photoshoot. Guess what? My birthday came. I travelled to stayed with my sister. Her friend made me a dress. My sister gave me money to do my shoot. I did it without him. It’s been over four years. I’ve made mad money from Graphic Design, started by designing with my smartphone. Yes my Android. I’ve not had any reason to go back. By the grace of God, I can’t even remember the last time I went broke. All because I chose to learn a skill that feeds me to this day. Do not downplay the power of learning a skill. I’m a big lover of love o. But I hate bullying in relationships. I hate relationships where a man overpowers and commands you because he gives you something. Ladies, the lesson is simple it is essential to empower yourself with a skill. It gives you audacity. It gives you freedom. It gives you peace.
