How do people who claim the Islamic Republic is supported by only a fringe - 5% or whatever - of Iranians explain Jalili's performance in the 2024 elections? While both candidates had to support the Islamic Republic - Iran obviously isn't a genuine democracy - Jalili was clearly far more hardline and theocratic than Pezeshkian, e.g. strongly advocating mandatory hijab. Surely those who voted for Jalili have to be assumed to be Islamic Republic supporters. (Anti-Islamic Republic Iranians, conversely, surely either didn't vote or voted for Pezeshkian as a lesser evil) Yet Jalili got 13.5M votes, which is about 20% of the adult population of Iran. But this is really a floor, not a ceiling, of the Islamic Republic's support in 2024, as, surely a decent chunk of Pezeshkian's voters, as well as some non-voters (who comprised 50% of the country's adult populatino, and were doubtless predominately opponents of the IR), supported the IR system. Short of evidence that the vote count in 2024 was rigged - and, despite the history of rigged vote counts in e.g. 2009, I've seen no evidence the 2024 count was rigged, and indeed considerable evidence against it - the results seems to pretty much discredit the claims of Monarchists about the level of support for the IR. I myself am comfortable assessing the Islamic Republic has about 20%-30% support among Iranians; lower than 2024, because of the protest massacres; but higher than before the US/Israeli war of aggression (rally around the flag effect). And most importantly, far too high for mass defections from security forces to occur. The reason some Iranians in the diaspora might think support is really 5%, or whatever is that they come from highly educated/urban circles, in e.g. Northern Tehran, where perhaps the support level really is something like that.
