I think of "Hwæt!" (the opening word of "Beowulf") as the first word of English literature. Scholars write articles on what it might mean. If you were translating "Beowulf," how would you capture "Hwæt!" in our English?

@dan_star @ACUmedia That's very helpful - I was under the impression that this laid bare more general problems concerning the stability of employment, but very happy if I'm wrong about that.

@dd0031 @ACUmedia I am appalled at ACU's behavior. Without in any way excusing it, it's probably worth bearing in mind, when making statements about academic employment in Australia in general, that research institutes operate in different ways than regular philosophy departments.

Heartbroken to learn of the news out of #ACU today. Leaving aside @ACUmedia, whose global rep is now in tatters, how could this action not expose the tenuous nature of academic employment in Australia? Really sad for friends and colleagues there and elsehwhere down under.
