If you're doing *any* out of class assessment, you're incentivizing AI use and harming students who do the work themselves. But some day we have to assess writing again. The solution is monitored computer-labs. What Universities are building these? We need to push for them.

@jhendersonYT I want to see a study that measures these stats across different fields, removing all journals that are not accepted as authentic by experts in each field, and showing stats at upper end of rankings of journals.

52% of new articles are AI-generated. There’s no reason to think this won’t continue. Writing is going to become a boutique craft, something quaint people do as historical reennactment.

Pay attention. Something dark might be coming. The murder of Charlie Kirk could have united Americans to confront political violence. Instead, Trump and his anti-democratic radicals look to be readying a campaign to destroy dissent. 1/ Here's what's happening.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Stephen Miller: "The last message that Charlie Kirk gave to me before he joined his creator in heaven was he said that we have to dismantle and take on the radical left organizations in this country that are fomenting violence. That was the last message that he sent me ... we are gonna do that."

Note that 67% of Democrats describe Israel's military actions in Gaza as 'genocide', 'major war crimes', or 'unjustified'. Only 13% of Democrats describe them as 'justified'. Unfortunately, they include the leaders of the Democratic Party (Booker, Harris, Jeffries, Schumer etc).

I think “hands off” is a great protest rallying cry. I also think making “hands off NATO” an option for a sign but making zero mention of Gaza (or Trump’s explicit endorsement of ethnic cleansing in Gaza) in any of the protest materials is beyond cowardly handsoff2025.com

Analytic philosopher here, explained to my daughter that I can’t say she’s pretty -- because of the knowledge norm of assertion and the sensitivity condition on knowledge. She’s crying but the argument is valid. AITA?

The left consensus on Tesla seems to be that trying to punish Elon with boycotts is worth it, no matter what it does to other important political projects. Sometimes the friend-enemy distinction dominates.
Troy Cross@thetrocro

Tesla’s tech and pricing is far better than the competition. This sort of thing WILL result in slower decarbonization, ie, more warming. Yet I haven’t heard anyone on the left say that. They’re too mad at that guy to care about the globe.

Page about Timothy Williamson, philosopher.
Someone said to Tim after a lecture: “I currently have your Vagueness book as bedtime reading.” Tim replied: “I hope it gives you many hours of sleep” 😴 🤣

@schafer_karl As Camus said, the only really important philosophical question is whether or not to commit suicide when one gets a negative book review.
