I saw a disturbing video by Yuval Noah Harari. He said that after October 7, Israel is facing the worst time in Jewish history since the destruction of the Second Temple, because Israel, through what he calls ethnic cleansing in Gaza, is destroying Judaism and its spirituality. According to him, this war will redefine Israel, transforming it from a nation that once knew how to endure catastrophes into a bully and a violent state. If I understood him correctly, his point is that the essence of Judaism is being a victim, not fighting back. By this logic, after October 7, Israel should have avoided eliminating Hamas and simply risked another massacre every few years. For centuries Jews had no state and no protection. They were massacred and six million Jews died because they had no way to defend themselves. Harari, a Jewish, gay atheist who rejects Judaism, wants to define Jewish “spirituality” as going back to that. Is this the price jews intellectuals must pay in order not to keep their place in elite circles?

This murder hit a weakness. I live in coastal California, in a safe area. While I'm male, and that might have slowed this criminal down, I'm equally as vulnerable as she was. Yeah, that's the "other" Northern California. The problem is that it's basically unpopulated compared to the rest of California, so it's culturally not scored by the actual map coordinates. It IS different, more like Southern Oregon than the rest of California. It's a great place, I visit, or at least pass through, somewhat frequently.

SF politicians came to understand that if homelessness was really bad, then huge amounts of money could be spread around. Keeping the homeless problem front and center, was easy. Give the addicts a stipend to buy drugs, tolerate their crime, and watch them come from all over the world to die in SF. And the money flowed like the Amazon. Never mind that downtown was destroyed, the people in power had money like no one could have imagined.

Somehow or other the city of San Francisco has determined that every addict on the planet deserves their drug of choice and free housing here.
