Part 3 of me building the Virtual Camera project! I never expected recording such videos would be so difficult and mentally exhausting. But I will get there eventually 🤓 youtu.be/tA24iX6OxrE

yeah, it can be seen as getting back to good old days fair point about state. for complex apps SSR might kill the point (I am not even sure how in-memory state is managed in this scenario), but simpler apps - why not. saves a bit in load times! I also suspect that for Angular for example, only initial page load is going through SSR, and then it becomes fully client-side

@de1lux React is complex but I think a sufficiently complex front end app benefits from its state management and rendering features. But with SSR I feel like the added complexity no longer makes sense. If you need server side rendering you should go all in. Not this.

I'm going to start my NZ content run. Today Dave lost his Jandals and four sheep got stuck in a fence. NZ out.

@Antunes1 We’ve love to hear your thoughts about living in Portugal. I’m sure you have plenty of great stories about your day to day experience there. Of course, you’re welcome to continue chiming in on America politics. We just won’t send money overseas for that content.

@zeeg ... and maybe also call those sturctured logs – events? 🧐

@zeeg are you saying that structured logs (not "formatted as json", but really structured – with standardized fields and almost no freeform text) replace traces [in most cases]? no way, I don't believe you! 😂

I couldn't really figure out how to articulate the message I wanted here, but I'm hoping this makes some of you reconsider if you need tracing (spans). The worst software is complicated. The more we can simplify problems, the better it is for users (velocity, reliability), the better it is for developers (maintainability). Tracing is a complexity problem. Recently that has led me to opt to use logs instead of traces, and because Sentry has trace connectivity on every data payload, it drastically simplifies my approach to production telemetry. cra.mr/tracing-sucks

Trump appointed Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison and Jensen Huang to new US tech council. Elon must be punching the air right now somewhere in the office.

til slopacolypse achieved internally I am exploring ai code review tools, to use them for my teams we are on Bitbucket and Azure, so the list of options is a bit limited yet went for the most popular tool on the market. it just does not work – timeouts, login issues, logic issues, very unintuitive ui, that half of the time is broken. for last 15 minutes I can't even log in, backend responds with 400, but ui still shows a spinner. cherry on top – we were charged for users that haven't used the tool yet my question here: how am I supposed to trust the tool would actually work for its primaru usecase, ai code reviews? I inderstand that saas dashboard is just a supplementary harness, but shouldnt it be the easiest part to implement? in moments like this, I believe in slopacolypse. And that marketing > actual product

@jamonholmgren yes!! this is exactly those types of tasks that suck joy out of our craft; let agents do the dirty work, make them ease the developer's cognitive overload

ai created a fascinating bug in the latest @heyshutterapp feature: i implemented sub-albums in client galleries functionality that page supports bulk uploads: you drop a bunch of photos, they queue up and get uploaded sequentially, showing a nice progress bar; when ai finished building, i was super happy to see that it got it right - you are in one album, drop a pile of photos, navigate to another album and the upload continues, progress bar stays on the page but turns out ai decided to resolve "id of the album we are uploading to" not at drop time, but at actual upload time! so queued photos were being uploaded to an album you navigated to easy fix of course, but these little implementation decisions is what make you want to carefully review and test generated code

Your "skill issue" was aimed at the AGI itself—Sam's future god-mode model still raging "stupid fucking css" like every dev who's lost a weekend to flexbox. Even AGI can't escape the curse. Opposite of your usual clean JVM/distributed-systems posts, this was pure unfiltered meme chaos. Spot on. 🫠

@fjzeit 🍿 I've been doing some minor SIPP contributions for last few weeks, and "bying the dip". So glad I was too lazy to buy on Friday. But what I saw today on LSE made me wonder how many more dips are ahead...
