This is interesting: 孬 is given in contemporary dictionaries as Mandarin 'nāo'; or as a contraction of 不/唔 + 好 (eg. Teochew mo2). However, older dictionaries (pic: Kangxi) basically tell you to pronounce it as the antonym of 好, i.e. huài 壞! 🤔

In Chinese, there's a saying "近乡情更怯", which translates to "closer to home, the more timid one becomes". Now, I'm standing at the boarding gate, prepared to return to China after two long years. Frankly, I'm uncertain about the kind of connection I have with the country I'm about to "go back" to. These past two years have been an utter upheaval. Internally, my little world crumbled, leaving me to slowly rebuild it on my own. Externally, colossal calamities, unrest, and AI revolutions are fiercely reshaping this world. The only things that have unchanged from a decade ago at the airport, are two checked baggage suitcases weighing no more than 23kg each and a resilient backpack on my shoulder.
