Pause for a moment and picture a small group of people you know well: colleagues, friends, the faces you pass each morning without thinking. Statistically, one in two of them will develop a malignant tumour at some point in their lifetime. And of that group, around a quarter will not survive it. These are not abstract numbers; they map directly onto ordinary lives, interrupted. Cancer is not rare, exceptional, or distant. It is woven into modern longevity itself. We need to study cancer, and to understand it at the deepest biological level, because only through that knowledge can treatments become more precise, more effective, and less destructive. But this effort is not limited to curing disease. It is also about learning how to support patients better. How to reduce suffering, preserve function, and protect dignity while biology is being fought at its limits.
