"We have supplies for two months" isn't the flex the government thinks it is. It is an extraordinary and unprecedented time, insofar is oil supply is concerned.

A reply to the Statement of Concern by Academics, Feminists, Activists and Civil Society Representatives 🫡 Professor Wickremesinghe's academic record, and international recognition are not in dispute. Her professional standing is well documented and not in dispute. However, the issue before the public is not her scholarship. It concerns an investigation into the alleged use of public funds by her Husband. In a democracy governed by the rule of law, any allegation relating to the use of public resources must be examined through a lawful and transparent processes. If an inquiry is underway and she was present on the trip in question, then requesting her appearance to clarify facts or provide information is not extraordinary. Participation in such a process does not, in itself, constitute harassment or political victimisation. Due process is a constitutional safeguard designed to protect both individuals under scrutiny and the public interest. Professional distinction, intellectual reputation, or proximity to political office cannot operate as a shield against lawful investigation. The final appeal in the statement urges that investigative actions should not result in harassment, intimidation, or reputational harm to independent academics. As a principle, protection from abuse must apply to every citizen equally. It cannot be framed as though it belongs uniquely to a particular professional class. To single out academics as requiring special insulation implies that status or class entitles someone to special protection. In a country with a long history of selective accountability and impunity, it is important to avoid creating the perception that certain categories of individuals deserve a more cautious or deferential application of legal process. The correct principle is universal... investigations must be conducted fairly, proportionately, and without political misuse . If there has been no wrongdoing, the process will establish that. If there has been impropriety, the same process must be allowed to reveal it. The integrity of our institutions depends on consistent standards, not on social standing or professional recognition. Equal justice requires that the law apply evenly and without exception. #SriLanka #SystemChangeLK #AccountabilityProjectLK

One more thing: The government is now going for an emergency procurement to buy coal in the spot market. If there is nothing wrong with the coal they procured and if the shipments are all arriving on time, why the emergency procurement?
Namini Wijedasa@nimilamalee

Let's break down the procurement red flags in #SriLanka's hugely problematic coal tender based entirely on the FACTs: 1) The Coal Company (LCC) approved its Master Procurement Plan and notified the Ministry to appoint a committee to manage the coal tender on APRIL 10.

Corruption and accountability matter only when the accused are not your friends. Legal processes are deemed abusive when applied to the privileged. Class loyalty always trumps principles and the rule of law.

📍 INDIA In the context of ongoing activities under the JSW Utkal Steel Ltd. (JUSL) project in Jagatsinghpur District, Odisha, the systematic intimidation and legal persecution of human rights defenders who are advocating, mobilising and speaking out against these and other business interests with adverse effects, continues. Front Line Defenders highlights the important communications by 8 United Nations Special Procedures mandate holders to the Government of India and to JSW Utkal Steel Ltd. (JUSL) in November 2025 concerning adverse impacts linked to the proposed integrated steel plant project, and call for an end to the targeting of human rights defenders who are peacefully opposing the project. Human Rights Commission of Pakistan
They jailed her for a tweet. On 24 January, human rights lawyer @ImaanZHazir and her husband @AdvHadiali were sentenced to 17 years in prison for tweeting and retweeting. Days before her arrest, we filmed her talking about PECA, the law they'd use to lock her up. 2026 marks 10 years of Pakistan's cybercrime law, which has been used to silence anyone who dares to speak up. Tweet about disappearances? Jail. Call out human rights abuses? Jail. Criticise the state? Jail. Imaan and Hadi are not the first. They won't be the last. Join HRCP's campaign against a law that does little more than kill free speech and punish dissent. Ten years is long enough. PECA has to go. #PECA10Years #ImaanMazari #FreedomOfExpression #DigitalRights #Pakistan
