True story. My brother-in-law suddenly lost his vision after retiring. His family doctor had retired and couldn’t see him advised him to go to the ER in Durham Region. ER ordered a CT scan. Found a pituitary brain tumor. Referred him to a surgeon at St. Michael’s in Toronto. Major brain surgery to remove the tumour. But developed bacterial meningitis two weeks after. Ended back at St. Mikes for another 2 weeks. Vision saved. Life saved. Annual follow-up MRIs. Tumor-free to this day. Retired. Healthy. With grandchildren. Cost to him: $0. He didn’t lose his house. And living his best life. Universal healthcare in Canada saves lives.
