@UltraRunner26 The biological reason is apparently your cortisol and adrenaline levels spike ehich block the production of melatonin and take a day to reset. Not sure how any of us csn tackle that but I have found that not worrying about being awake helps me to get back to sleep

@UltraRunner26 I’ve picked up an injury 6 weeks before a bucket list trail 20miler (nothing compared to your mileage but a big target for me). Struggling to believe the PT when she tells me the only way I will make the start line is to do no impact work for 2 weeks

@DavidDack All the time. When the red mist comes down I will go all out to reel someone in. But I am 54. And my hamstring lets me know that.

I went out for an easy jog yesterday.
On the way back, I passed a group of kids, maybe six to ten years old, racing each other. And for reasons I still don’t understand, my 39 year old brain decided… yes. Today we are racing children.
As I got closer, I yelled, “On your mark… get set… go!” and took off like it was the final stretch of a championship race. Full sprint. Arms pumping. Absolutely no business moving that fast on an “easy” day.
Halfway through I heard one of them yell, “He’s old but fast!” That was it. Ego fully activated. Pride would not let me back off. My chest was burning. My legs were screaming. But quitting in front of six children? Not happening.
I won.
And now my 39 year old male body is reminding me that victories over elementary schoolers come with consequences.
Tell me I’m not the only one who’s let ego ruin an easy run.

@UltraRunner26 Getting to the start line of a half last month after battling hamstring tendinopathy for 7 months. Getting round 4 mins quicker than my “stretch” best prediction was an added bonus

@LydiardsWay The flip side of that is: if you are slower and someone faster offers to have a social run with you at your pace: Say yes! I would love to run more with different people and it would do me/my training good to have a chill run, but I often offer and people say no.

@Tonedad @ElliottBlackwe3 Oh this is bringing back happy memories. I need to go to see my mum and see if she’s still got the books 🙂

@UltraRunner26 Here’s mine. I raced on Sunday. First since I tore my hamstring in March. Lots of patience and perseverance with physio got me to the start line and I ran 10 mins quicker than I thought my best result could be considering how much my training suffered

@ChrisHewgill @fastcuriouspod There is a LOT of phone checking going on here at Silverstone while we wait for the half marathon to start!

It’s 1am here and still waiting to do @fastcuriouspod given the McLaren News, or lack thereof. Can I do a podcast that is filmed in bed?

@stevemagness I needed to read that today: thank you. I am racing tomorrow and definitely don’t feel 100%

“I didn’t feel much like running.”
Those were Don Bowden’s words before the race that made history.
He was exhausted. He hadn’t been sleeping. He’d just finished a final exam an hour before.
He wasn’t expecting much.
And yet...he became the first American to break 4 minutes in the mile.
Just imagine if he said, "I'm tired, I don't feel good. Let's wait until another day?"

@LydiardsWay I might try this. I have been fighting with hamstring tendinopathy for a year now and it flares every time I try to up the pace. Maybe fartlek is a gentler way to build up the tendon’s tolerance?
