@UltraRunner26 The biological reason is apparently your cortisol and adrenaline levels spike ehich block the production of melatonin and take a day to reset. Not sure how any of us csn tackle that but I have found that not worrying about being awake helps me to get back to sleep

The hardest part of high-mileage training isn’t the early mornings, speed sessions, or even the long runs. It’s the damn sleep. Everything else I can handle… but getting on a solid sleep routine? Absolute nightmare. Tried everything. 😭 Am I the only one?

@UltraRunner26 I’ve picked up an injury 6 weeks before a bucket list trail 20miler (nothing compared to your mileage but a big target for me). Struggling to believe the PT when she tells me the only way I will make the start line is to do no impact work for 2 weeks

I took a rest day today. So I basically lost all the fitness I had. Signed every runner.

@DavidDack All the time. When the red mist comes down I will go all out to reel someone in. But I am 54. And my hamstring lets me know that.

I went out for an easy jog yesterday. On the way back, I passed a group of kids, maybe six to ten years old, racing each other. And for reasons I still don’t understand, my 39 year old brain decided… yes. Today we are racing children. As I got closer, I yelled, “On your mark… get set… go!” and took off like it was the final stretch of a championship race. Full sprint. Arms pumping. Absolutely no business moving that fast on an “easy” day. Halfway through I heard one of them yell, “He’s old but fast!” That was it. Ego fully activated. Pride would not let me back off. My chest was burning. My legs were screaming. But quitting in front of six children? Not happening. I won. And now my 39 year old male body is reminding me that victories over elementary schoolers come with consequences. Tell me I’m not the only one who’s let ego ruin an easy run.

@UltraRunner26 Getting to the start line of a half last month after battling hamstring tendinopathy for 7 months. Getting round 4 mins quicker than my “stretch” best prediction was an added bonus

If you can only pick one. What athletic accomplishment are you most proud of for 2025? For me, I have to go with finally running a 1:13 half marathon.

@LydiardsWay The flip side of that is: if you are slower and someone faster offers to have a social run with you at your pace: Say yes! I would love to run more with different people and it would do me/my training good to have a chill run, but I often offer and people say no.

I hate running with people who get fixated on their pace. My idea of a group Sunday run is, you meet up, you run as a group and you leave no one behind! That's how teams are made. It's an old adage these days. People have got too self absorbed in themselves. Chill. Enjoy it!

It's true, your fellow runners will train faster than you. They chase the numbers...it looks good. Big miles...fast paces. But if they can't lift themselves on race day and they're staring at your backside going away, it means nothing.

@UltraRunner26 Here’s mine. I raced on Sunday. First since I tore my hamstring in March. Lots of patience and perseverance with physio got me to the start line and I ran 10 mins quicker than I thought my best result could be considering how much my training suffered

Sharing your runs may not seem like much to you, but someone on the other side sees you showing up every day. Your runs or paces will surely resonate with someone else. Share your story — if you motivate even one runner to stick with it, it was worth it. 👊

You can't control how your body feels after a rough night or a tough exam. But you give it a go. And showing up—especially when you don’t feel ready—is what makes moments of greatness possible. Don’t wait for perfect. Line up anyway. Give yourself a shot.

“I didn’t feel much like running.” Those were Don Bowden’s words before the race that made history. He was exhausted. He hadn’t been sleeping. He’d just finished a final exam an hour before. He wasn’t expecting much. And yet...he became the first American to break 4 minutes in the mile. Just imagine if he said, "I'm tired, I don't feel good. Let's wait until another day?"

@LydiardsWay I might try this. I have been fighting with hamstring tendinopathy for a year now and it flares every time I try to up the pace. Maybe fartlek is a gentler way to build up the tendon’s tolerance?

It's a fun relaxed way of building intensity and tolerance of pace. Generally a few weeks of this can give a boost to fitness and its an intervention which can be adapted in so many ways. Work and recovery can be changed to suit.

When we've got an individual used to a pattern of regular running that fits with their 'total environment' we begin to add interventions. One staple we might start with is a 20-40 min fartlek with efforts anywhere between 15 and 120 secs. Getting the body used to stronger stuff.
