बेटी की बलि! हजारीबाग रेशमीदेवी का बेटा मानसिक रूप से बीमार था. इलाके की भगतिनी शांति ने इसके निदान के लिए कुंवारी लड़की की बलि बताई. रामनवमी की अष्टमी के दिन रेशमीदेवी अपने छोटी बेटी (13) को भगतिनी के पास लेकर गयी. उसके साथ गांव का भीमराम भी था. भगतिनी ने बताया कि अच्छे नक्षत्र में देवास (भूत) आयेगा. रात नौ बजे घर में स्थित मनसा देवीमंदिर में तंत्र पूजा शुरू हुई. बच्ची को सुला दिया गया. भगतिनी ने बांस का कालिंग स्टिक बच्ची के चारों ओर घुमाया और कहा कि देवास आ गया है, कुंवारी लड़की का खून चाहिए. भगतिनी के कहने पर रेशमदेवी ने बच्ची का पेंट नीचे खिसकाया. भगतिनी ने बांस की स्टिंग बच्ची के चारों ओर घुमाकर उसके प्राइवेट पार्ट में डाल दी. चीखने पर बच्ची को गला घोंट दिया गया और भीमराम ने भगतिनी के दिये गये पत्थर से बच्ची के सिर पर प्रहार किया. इससे बच्ची का सिर फट गया. बच्ची से सिर से निकला खून अंजुली में लेकर मनसादेवी को चढ़ाया गया. पुलिस ने भीमराम, रेशमदेवी और भगतिनी को गिरफ्तार किया है. इस मामले के उजागर होने से पहले पूरे समाज में आक्रोश था. हाईकोर्ट ने स्वत: संज्ञान लेकर जांच के आदेश दिये. STI ने पूरे मामले की जांच भी की है.
