The Book of Genesis, chapters 34 involves the tribe of Jacob (Israel) and the inhabitants of Shechem: Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, was defiled by Shechem, the son of Hamor, the Hivite prince of the land. Hamor proposed that Dinah marry Shechem, suggesting a covenant between their peoples, which would involve intermarriage and shared land. Jacob's sons, particularly Simeon and Levi, pretended to agree but set a condition: all the men of Shechem must be circumcised, as the Israelites could not give their sister to an uncircumcised man. The men of Shechem agreed to this condition, hoping for alliance and intermarriage, and they all underwent circumcision. On the third day, when the men of Shechem were still in pain from the circumcision, Simeon and Levi attacked the city, killed all the males, including Shechem and Hamor, and took Dinah back. They also plundered the city because of the disgrace brought upon their sister.
