some guy named Abel gifted this book, which includes Brokeback Mountain, to a guy named Mark 21 years ago with this message and now it‘s somehow ended up in my hands

@janetm50723412 @johnbestwest 100% and thanks for sharing this - I was explaining the exact same philosophy the other day and it really struck a cord with the person shopping with me - they hadn’t thought of it that way before. The world definitely needs more of this mindset.

@johnbestwest Why I don't buy the discounted food. There are many who need it far more than my household does. Watching supermarket customers hoping for some discounted meat or fish, and the disappointment when there is none. Putting food back and checking purse. Others oblivious.

I've just been to the Co-op (5pm). A man came in and said to the sales assistant 'I've not eaten today and I'm hungry'. She replied 'Come with me and you can have some free food'. She walked him to the reduced section and said 'If there's anything you want, you can take it'.

@rtenews 25 years of planning, hundreds of millions spent, endless reviews, redesigns and reroutes… Only in Ireland could 19 NIMBYs stop one of the country’s most vital infrastructural projects in its tracks at the final hour. What a farce 🤯

The first print issue of Works In Progress is landing on people's doorsteps today! Over the next week or so, our thousands of subscribers, everywhere from Alaska to Australia, should be receiving their first copy. We are trying to make the most beautiful physical magazine on the planet, and I am very excited about how we've started. This issue has pieces on inflatable space stations (which you can read online today – worksinprogress.co/issue/inflatab…), the war between the Swiss and Japanese watch industries, the "great downzoning" in the world's cities, and on whether Ancient Greek and Roman statues were really painted as badly as museums claim (perhaps not). And much more. I hope you all enjoy it! And if you'd like to get a copy of this edition, you can subscribe here and you'll be sent this most recent copy, along with the rest of your year's subscription as it comes out: worksinprogress.co/print/

If you're 13 right now here's what you should do: Spend all your time reading philosophy, sci fi, poetry, and history. Go to museums and look at every damn thing in there. Watch all the classic films and maybe every single movie made in the 90s. Learn how to write prose, document your thoughts and observations as thoroughly as you can. Go outside, play sports, learn how to play an instrument. Paint. Listen to all kinds of music. Live life as humanly as you possibly can, and bring that love and energy back to whatever it is you decide to do in the future.

When we sat down with @alexandr_wang at Meta Connect 2025, he shared his advice for young people: “If you’re 13 right now, you should spend all your time vibe coding. This is the Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg moment. The people who grow up with these tools will have an immense advantage in the future economy.” From his appearance on the show in September.

I'm a single issue voter, I want the warm lights back. Streetlights are too blue. Headlights are too bright. It's a crime against nature and God. We need to demand 2800K or below color balance for all outdoor lights. Some cities regulate 3000k max, that's still too damn blue.

We've transformed our city in many ways in the last five years. This street used to be full of cars. Now there's music, laughter, food, people sitting down. Life slows down a little bit on Parliament Street.

@patrickc We need to do a better job at supporting young talent & startups in Ireland but I’d argue that the best thing a person can do is leave their home country to expand their horizons, opportunities and network in their 20’s - wanting a broad worldview is the mark of a great leader

Today I had lunch with twelve young Irish people -- a wonderful bunch in their early 20s working on rockets, biotech, software/AI, etc. I enquired about whether any were planning on leaving Ireland over the next 3 years. All hands but one went up. I asked the holdout why he was staying; he clarified that he was also going to leave, just not in the next three years. Mobility is a wonderful thing, but it feels worrisome if everyone in such a group concludes that they ought to emigrate. This desire seems to generalize. A 2023 study suggested that more young people want to leave Ireland than any other EU country.

@annie_mcginley I’ve supported 20+ children who were the victims of sexual assault in court over the past four years… in three of those cases the perpetrators were foreign nationals - the rest were Irish men of all ages and backgrounds

This, a thousand times this 👇 The day of the 'protest' at City West a man was in court who sexually abused his 4yr old niece and her 8yr old sister Where were the protests for them? Where was the 'she was only 4' hastag? Stop using women as an excuse for your racism

@AustinTunnell Ok, so orientation over projection… do you just eyeball the angle, or is there a sweet spot for spacing and uniformity?

Thank you! We usually keep or corbels (extruding the brick) to about 1”. Can totally do more if not supporting anything oven it’s very simple! Hard to compromise unless you are trying to put weight on the ‘cantilevered’ part. Otherwise it’s just aesthetic and you can backfill with mortar/cut brick.

Just look at this arch... Our largest to date at 18' wide (2nd one). Substantial buttressing at ends to counteract thrust. Notice how we play with the direction and depth of the brick in the arch to create detail and shadow. Stupid simple, but adds so much richness.

🌳 Paris just transformed one of its most iconic squares: Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. Once a vast stone esplanade, it’s now an urban forest. Inaugurated on June 21, 2025, this project is reshaping how the city tackles climate, space, and livability. 🌍

We’ve wanted someone to write this book for years. Naturally, @_brianpotter was our first choice! Origins is a deeply-researched study of how entire industries get cheaper over time (& why others don’t). Put slightly differently, it’s a book about how civilizations become rich.

How was penicillin able to eliminate 80% of WWII battlefield deaths? Why did nails once make up 0.4% of US GDP? In The Origins of Efficiency, @_brianpotter unpacks how production efficiency happens, and why it is of civilizational importance. Preorder: press.stripe.com/origins-of-eff…

The new plans for College Green look great. It'll take political and public pressure to get it done - the Greens will be backing it all the way. We can build a better Dublin: we just need to keep pushing for it!
