Just purely on style, watching Hegseth at these is one more sign of decline. Compare his overcooked pap—"our warfighters will rain hellfire upon the enemy etc etc"—with Rumsfeld, off the cuff, evilly quipping "We're not running out of targets, Afghanistan is." You'll never be him

In 2003, next to footage of the US bombing Iraq, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said on TV that the footage was a kind of postmodern, subjective non-truth that was "not taking place." I don't think the Trump people have someone who can operate on this level
