Masters students, people with PhDs, all sorts. I think there's a misconception that people teach themselves about tech. In some instances, sure. But when these aren't constant tasks, people find it difficult. I remember the wonder of learning new things on the computer.

Are computer skills still required first-year subjects? It was in 2004 to bring everyone up to speed because of access. Now I meet people who can't hyperlink or figure out calendars. It's not their fault. They've just never been shown how to do these things.

Strange. I thought I read this judgment quite carefully but, even factoring in that I read it a long time ago, this bears no resemblance to what I remember reading at all.

The Tshwane street name case is one of those horrible cases of constitutional contrivance. It takes obvious (actual and constitutional) reality and twists and turns it into something depraved. The Court specifically targeted the Afrikaans community and virtually says outright that it it is intolerable for them to use the Constitution to protect their heritage and culture. The Court also (and this is my entire LL.D. thesis) participated in the ridiculous fabrication that the "entire Constitution [imposed on everyone] the duty to transform". This totalitarian vision is on its face false, and an opportunistic reading of plain constitutional language. No constitution would provide for the protection of cultural rights (like ours does) but also implicitly and in blink-and-you-miss-it woo-woo ways sanction the cultural reengineering of the whole society by a tiny political elite. Trash jurisprudence. The Court's status alone does not make it respectable, any more than the judgments of the Appellate Division that came before.

LRT Last night got a notification popped that "Google Enhanced Protection is enabled". Searched what that was & it's some AI powered Chrome security thing. I didn't change anything, it just turned on & I don't think you can turn it off. We're all, even against our will, using AI.

An interesting article I read on ncodube.blog is highly readable, well-written and intelligently argued. It talks unflatteringly of the ANC and MKP Ad Hoc Committee members, some of whom have been referred to as "toy soldiers" by their own parliamentary colleagues because they wear fatigues in parliament though they have never seen any war. The article says their hostility towards Robert McBride [an ex-MK combatant who was on death-row for his guerrilla activities] was palpable, personal, visceral, and almost envious. The writer says, "Why? Perhaps they too have internalised the 30 years of bad press that has dogged McBride. Or perhaps it is something more sinister: the discomfort of politicians who possess inflated or inherited struggle credentials confronting a man whose heroism is not performative but lived. McBride's authenticity exposes their embellishments. His scars expose their stories. His survival exposes their insecurities."
