@Necessary_Cho Anyway, Abubakar Shekau thought he was the good Muslim and others infidels, the Khawarij saw Ali (R.A) as an apostate and killed him claiming jihad, the twelver Shiites see Abubakar as an apostate to this day. Danfodiyo made Takfir on Hausa rulers but we see him as a Khawarij.

Those who ruled before the Usmanu Danfodiyo jihad were largely from the Hausa ethnic groups across Arewa. Some were Muslims, but many still practised traditional beliefs alongside Islam. Their reigns were often criticised for feudal oppression & social vices, including land grabbing, extortion, adultery, sorcery & shirk. The jihad was aimed at reforming society, removing such rulers, and consolidating the implementation of Sharia in the land. Because many of those who embraced the jihad were Fulanis, political authority eventually shifted largely to them, partly as a reward for their loyalty & role in the movement. Some argue that bcoz Danfodiyo himself was Fulani, the jihad was more political than religious. I still disagree with that argument, though I admit I may be biased.
