Just couple of hours ago, @latha_venkatesh (over)smartly retweeted a 2012 tweet of then Gujarat CM @narendramodi ji. It appeared on my timeline. But it seems she removed her retweet after the @CNBCTV18News #FakeNews controversy. Fortunately, I happened to take a screenshot, to respond a little later. Latha Venkatesh tried to peddle the narrative that the 2012 fuel hike by the Manmohan Singh led government is comparable to today's price hike. It is not!! In 2026, fuel prices have risen because a war between Israel and Iran has shaken global oil markets, pushing crude prices up worldwide. India, which imports most of its oil, is simply absorbing that external shock. In 2012, under Manmohan Singh, petrol prices were hiked by ₹7.5+ in one go. Not because of a sudden war, but due to internal fiscal stress and wrong policy decisions. Big difference. One is a war-driven global crisis. The other was a domestic policy shock. Don’t confuse compulsion with choice. When you're making a comparison next time, don't be selective with facts, Latha!!

Totally in agreement with @PMOIndia on curtailing travel, fuel use etc. If it’s a global crisis, and beyond our control, self discipline will be the best foot forward. However, I also have a suggestion for @narendramodi ji. 🙏 Sir, collectively we have close to 5000 MLAs and MPs in India. Whenever they move, official vehicles aside, they are accompanied by hordes of followers and supporters. Never seen even an MLA with less than 5-8 vehicle convoy. And sometimes these cavalcades run into hundreds of vehicles. And political leaders, across parties, travel daily to multiple locations. The convoys never shorten nor stop. You can add 2-3 independent vehicle convoys to immediate families of entire number too, just for calculations. Collectively, we are talking about hundreds and thousands of vehicles daily, running for no apparent reason other than accompanying the leader and ‘to be seen’, and clocking millions of miles each day. Sir, if you can direct these leaders, to cut down these illogical miles, it not only would help the present initiative, but also set a case for better future where twenty cars with horns blaring on roads don’t push commoners like us aside because the leader has to travel by supersonic speed to fashionably arrive late at his / her next function. You’ve been a common citizen like us. You didn’t inherit the chair and power. I’m sure you understand the sheer insult and disgust we feel when bulky bouncers and cops hanging out from pilot and other vehicles just shove other vehicles around. So you will be resolving this crassness and unruly behaviour too. Practical problems are surface repressions of deep rooted cultural issues. Like your Swach Bharat initiative. No amount of infrastructure can keep India clean if we don’t stop throwing garbage on roads. I think, in the same manner, car pooling, minimising travel, not running ACs in cars in parking because the VIP cannot ensure 20 seconds of heat while the car cools when AC is switched on, traveling by public transport - all are more of cultural issue than practical ones. And I’m very sure, a step taken by leaders will go a long way in making your initiative successful, sir. Jai Hind - An Indian citizen.

Can we please stop ‘study tours’ and foreign junkets of MLAs, MPs, ministers and bureaucrats first? At least common citizens travel abroad on their own money, AFTER paying a whopping 33% as taxes. Babus and politicians travel abroad on study tours on taxpayers’ money. @narendramodi ji, this message is not really fair. Govt should lead by example, instead of always asking citizens to make the change.
