Turns out the Symfony ErrorHandler (a very small package) is already doing this. It allows any PSR-3 logger to log specific levels. Example logging deprecations to "deprecation.log" (and hiding it in the output) and handling all other errors like normal: gist.github.com/wouterj/130433…

@Mark_Baker @PovilasKorop Maybe we should remove deprecations from the error handler, and report them using a new handler? One that is more forgiving for all users that don't use a framework with an error handler with special deprecation treatment? Or, as a start, create a standalone PHP lib doing this?

These websites now use github.com/doctrine/rst-p… instead of Python's Sphinx library. This a nice change: it's easier to maintain (no more Python) & easier to extend (just write PHP) Thanks @greg_war, @doctrineproject, @jwage & @greg0ire for working on and maintaining that library!
