@NancyEBailey1 It is all about the ‘ quality time’ needed for those that take longer to acquire literacy skills. Unfortunately the classroom teacher just does not have the luxury of time needed to devote to these learners. Simple answer to a problem.. two teachers per class ..$$$$

Once upon a time, teachers had to study reading disabilities in universities & obtain serious credits, to get teacher certification to teach students who displayed reading difficulties. What happened? nancyebailey.com/2019/06/04/the…

@BenisonMrs The words are not ineffective - it is the teaching method.

@GentleAllison @readteach77 @rhardin29556971 Great question - A problem SoR are now encountering, and one those of us who know the value of phonics, but do not endorse rigid SSP found the answer to many years ago.

@readteach77 @rhardin29556971 @dejaynjd @1298gaia @NarelleLyn How can differentiation be done within whole group explicit systematic phonics instruction?
English

@GentleAllison @rhardin29556971 @readteach77 Every new written word learners encounter requires sound to print understanding. Phonics teaching should be programmed and flexible and used all day, not a specific time slot - phonics underpins all word level work (across the curriculum).

@dejaynjd @rhardin29556971 @readteach77 @1298gaia @NarelleLyn How much of the literacy session does THRASS recommend spending on phonics? In minutes.

@LecturaHamish @HelenProulx2 Very sorry to hear Hamish, Sadly lots of good experienced teachers are finding they are being ignored, their results are being ignored and they are undermined and bullied into using a SoR one size fits all programs- our school based expertise is quickly being lost ..
English

@HelenProulx2 That teachers kids have probably surpassed SoR kids. I have sadly now left teaching for exactly the same reason. SoR bullying, holding kids back .. no leeway to figure out words by themselves other than pre-learnt phonics. So thankful I didn’t have to learn to read with SSP.

@HelenProulx2 I find it hard to understand the aggression and silencing tactics - it’s against the values of the profession.
I’m saddens me that amazing teachers knowledge and experience is being dismissed - due to misinformation and assumptions of how others teach
or have taught.

Big study: curiosity is an important predictor of acad achievemt across the board but esp. for low-income kids: is.gd/zLBk8u.
Painfully ironic given the curiosity-killing practices (scripted direct instruction, behavior management, etc.) that such kids get in spades.
