Written from the perspective of White Gladis, the orca sinking yachts off the Iberian coast, who reminds us that through collective action a better world is possible. With love, instagram.com/reel/DFallPWgO…

@bobdylanlover63 Agree on Baez. Agree with Strokes on principle, that principle being “Someday” is their most popular (and best) song.

I don’t know what causes a soul to darken so thoroughly, whether it be greed, or hunger for power, or some unknown trauma, but the US government has lost one of its most notorious cheerleaders for racist militarism, blood-soaked imperialism, murderous Zionism, and wanton destruction across the globe. If there is to be sadness, let it be for his countless victims, and for the curse of impunity that allows monsters like him to be lauded and rewarded even as their victims cry for justice.

Julian Casablancas expanded on his recent Zionism comments in a speech at the Oxford Union. When the Strokes frontman appeared on SubwayTakes a few months ago, he said “American Zionists get the benefits of white privileged people but talk like they are Black people during slavery.” He continued, “Just for the people that are going to be like, ‘Hamas, October 7th.’ Yes, bad. But Native American rebellions didn’t mean it was okay to do what we did. Slave rebellions that were violent didn’t mean that slavery is not bad.” In late May, Casablancas appeared at the Oxford Union (the debating society where he previously spoke in 2021) and expanded on those remarks. His speech began with an argument about the power of words and the need for more precise political language. He said capitalism, communism, socialism, and libertarianism have been bent and stretched to the point of losing their meaning. Then he brought up Zionism and argued that the word has become too broad to be useful, proposing more specific categories “to help avoid future discord.” Casablancas said Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians but identified himself as a “green liner,” someone who accepts the 1967 Green Line borders. He contrasted that position with “expansionists” — “the good old settler types just shooting at Palestinians and taking homes daily.”

@markwolters54 I like most of it tbh, it’s him having fun in the studio in the era where he literally lived in the studio. It’s not long enough or cohesive enough to be an album but give me this over most of his 80s output

Dylan (1973) Dylan's worst album. Sure the record company released it w/no input from Dylan, however he still recorded the crap. That being said Lily would be okay if those backing vox were deleted. Terrible album but I had to get it cuz you know, it's Dylan.

@fad_albert Saw him first in 1992 when I was 13, probably saw him 15 times between then and 2007. Only saw one truly great show, at a former rave venue in Dallas two months after Jerry died. I will not allow gaslighting of Dylan live performances, they are by and large not good

@DylanRevisited Summer before freshman year of high school we went on a family road trip, V 1-3 on cassettes. By the end of the trip I was obsessed with Bob Dylan. The single most formative compilation of my life

@DylanRevisited I know I waxed poetic over Self Portrait a few days ago, and I do love the album. But...the choice is obvious here, BIABH is one of Dylan's finest albums. The final four songs alone could slay many giants

If you ever doubt how magical this world is, one day you will decide to go to a World Cup watch party in Oakland that you found online to root for a country where you spent two years trying to coax English out of the mouths of Cape Verdean teenagers. 1/7

@bowtiedgerman NYC is obviously the #1 city in the US and would be my choice if I were rich, but Chicago would be my #2 over LA no question. The Chicago>LA>Chicago pipeline is real

Much of the Chicago discourse is based on a sort of forced-sunk cost If you were raised in Chicagoland, you have some degree of a bond with the city. It becomes your de facto city for professional maximization Moving to NYC/LA is an uphill battle vs staying in Chicago where you have family and friends Living in Chicago is still an A-tier human experience but unfortunately the existence of premier coastal cities is why we behave this way

@Steven_Hyden zero critics exist without the artists who actually put their ass on the line to create so the whole convo is a huge 'who cares?' why would a critic have main character energy?

Because it's impossible for me to resist a good "state of music criticism" convo, I wrote about Anthony Fantano calling himself "the most relevant and impactful" music critic ever, and whether I agree. (I don't, but he's not TOTALLY off base.) stevenhyden.substack.com/p/poll-is-anth…
