From Twitter spaces to acquaintances at conferences to team members and full-fledged friends, the short time on this ride that I got to know @MatthewPlomin was nothing short of a privilege.
Matt was a razor-sharp guy with the capacity to learn just about anything he had a desire to. He was a CFA who managed mind-boggling amounts of money at DWS; he taught himself how to run a Cardano node and mint / burn with no prior coding experience and would fix a project car while hanging out with us on Discord. I once asked @ada_bookworm : "Has anyone thought to ask if this guy is like... a genius or something."
He did all this while being a devoted husband to Jill and raising a family of 7 children. Matt was more than just his competencies and his accomplishments, though. What stood out about Matt was a guy who had an almost peerless level of integrity in a crypto industry that's known for anything but that.
In my mind, this is what most people should remember about him. He was a person of impeccable character. He always tried to do right. And when he wronged, he was more than capable of showing contrition. None of us are perfect, but I think he was someone who was concerned about this world, his place in it, and how he could make it better.
Though I've never been particularly religious myself, I've always admired the strength Matt drew from his strong faith. He was a devout Catholic. From leading a team at a major finance firm, to leading a startup crypto project and, most importantly, leading a strong family of 9, Matt was the shepherd. He led others by being an exemplar of conviction and character. It's no coincidence that he was a totem in the Cardano community.
The best way to remember Matt is to internalize what he taught us and to make the best parts of him a part of us. If we do that, he'll never be gone.
