Just to let you know that I've a piece on @RTESunMisc this week on In Dublin. First published 50 years ago it was a seminal publication that both celebrated the city and wanted to improve. I even spent a few weeks selling it from a patch on Nassau Street.

Good news Friday: Belfast's Art Deco 1930s Floral Hall is to receive half a milllion pounds of funding from the City Council, for the installation of a new roof to help make the crumbling structure watertight again. Located in the grounds of Belfast Zoo, the Floral Hall once hosted major acts including Pink Floyd and Roy Orbison, and was a popular dance and rollerskating venue. However the B1 listed building has been closed since 1972 and fallen into a perilous state of decay. After the removal of asbestos, the new funding is the latest step in efforts to ultimately restore the venue to full public use. Designed 1935-36 by David Wright Boyd, Floral Hall is one of Belfast’s most striking Art Deco buildings; reminiscent of pavilions displayed at the 1925 Paris Exposition. The building is arranged as a circular auditorium, topped with a shallow dome, and supported by two rectangular service blocks. The hall was constructed using a steel frame with a brick façade which was rendered in plaster to give the impression of being fashionable reinforced concrete. The curved East elevation is emphasised with two horizontal bands of windows which offer panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. The main entrance is created through simple intersecting geometric volumes which combine to form a stepped façade. Sweeping steps leading to a semi-circular portico give a feeling of monumentality and sense of arrival. Whilst externally it exuded simplicity, internally the hall was colourful and opulent in materials and decoration.

The crumbling historic Assembly Rooms in Belfast have been granted some much needed funding to help preserve and eventually restore it. The money is coming from an international organisation called the World Monuments Fund. Robbie Meredith has this story.

Finally, I got to see inside the Assembly Rooms. We can't share photos of the inside, but it is a fantastic building and is packed with history. Exciting times!

The roof is going back on our Floral Hall! After decades of neglect, £500k has been secured to make this iconic North Belfast building watertight again, protected from further damage, and firmly on the path to reopening for the people of Belfast. 👏👏
