Back in 1907, getting a massive heat wave was completely possible, it was just rare. But the odds of these extreme heat waves have drastically increased since. It’s not that heat waves didn't exist before, it's that they are happening much more frequently and lasting much longer now.
Also Nebraska and Kansas represent a tiny fraction of the Earth's surface. On that specific day in 1907, while the Midwest was baking, other parts of the world might have been unusually cold, keeping the global average stable. Today, the difference is that the baseline temperature for the entire planet is rising simultaneously.

Nearly half of the country doesn't have a passport, and a new one costs $165.
