Canada had a big day on the trade file. Two deals, same day: UAE (CEPA) — negotiations concluded in Toronto, 47 days start to finish. Lower tariffs on most goods, fewer technical barriers, comes on the heels of the UAE’s $70B investment pledge from November. Bilateral trade: $3.4B in 2024. Ecuador (FTA) — actually signed in Ottawa, not just concluded. 99.6% of Ecuador’s exportable products get duty-free access to Canada, covering 600+ products. 10 months of negotiations, 29 chapters. Bilateral trade: $2B in 2025. Ecuador now gets the same footing as Colombia and Peru already have with Canada. Neither is in force yet — both still need ratification. UAE deal also still needs signing on top of that.
