Project Hail Mary: the hype is real. The book’s has been my comfort rereading for a while, and the movie hits all its feels. Sure winner for Best Performance By A Boulder. I give it five claws up.

@besttrousers I think part of it is that the published inflation numbers aren’t trustworthy. 2.4% is much lower than what I’ve seen in my own expenses.

@KeyTryer Part of this is just that photorealism is what people buy. We’ve done both stylized and photorealistic games. The photorealistic ones sell better. That’s the primary reason we stay in that direction.

The end-game of all that engineering, if there's any, is quite literally to construct ultra immersive virtual worlds. The people who invented the original 3D rendering techniques were hoping to achieve that, and it's still the major goal of most commercial engines.

The truth is that the limitations of "traditional" computer rendering towards realism were reached a while ago along three axis: 1. Models can only be so detailed. Human modelers can only pay so much attention, which is why games moved to photogrammetry and procedural generation

@despair It walked me through making a Slack bot and I added it to vendor channels with limited read and write scopes. :) It knows the file naming structure we're using as well as the general metadata I track, so it quickly flags those for me.

Just got back to work after a week at GDC and have tons to catch up on. Claude Code combs all my main Slack channels for action items, groups them by vendor, updates my Obsidian daily note with to-dos, and adds links to each individual Slack thread so I can read the full context.

Back to the office -> two minutes continual notifications from every needy app upon booting up. You have ten meetings last week! Windows wants to update! Adobe wants to update! Notepad wants to update! Here's a bunch of Slack messages you already answered from your phone!

@jonjones How did you enable Claude Code to read Slack messages?

It's been a lot of fun finding ways Claude Code can help with heavy lifts on data/organization/scanning all my comms channels and databases.

@AndyMasley The disconnect is that you have a fundamentally different relationship to the truth than Joshi’s readers do.

@G_S_Bhogal Autistic take. It's a test to see what team you're on, so in a way they're right. If you're on team A, any and all criticism of team B is acceptable.

@dilanesper They mean net zero carbon. The carbon in the fuel came out of the atmosphere via photosynthesis, so burning the fuel does not add more carbon to the atmosphere than was there originally.

(The problem, of course, is that ethanol-- bio- or not-- is made out of carbon atoms. I guess they really mean that they have some way to control CO2 emissions, but it's definitely not zero carbon.)

NASCAR telecasts constantly mention sponsors. Sponsors are the lifeblood of a very expensive sport. So it's always "Goodyear tires and Sunoco racing fuel". Mike Joy just referred to it as "Sunoco zero carbon bio-ethanol". NASCAR doing its part to fight global warming!

It’s alarming to hear “this game needs to make >$100M per year to avoid layoffs”, but think about how much it costs to employ 1000 people. We can’t go on taking these giant existential risks on every project.

@djwhatley Their approach was basically “we built our gameplay around what blueprints can support.” The slide is a bit hyperbolic for effect - they did write or extend a lot of blueprint nodes where needed.

@despair I'm impressed they can do this - even on the small project I've been working on, I have run up against things you just can't do natively in BP, e.g. regex matching.
