But, something that not everyone sees is that no matter where he is, he is always RIGHT THERE: present. Present at the White House. Ministry? Present. Dinner? Present. Talking to a stranger? Present. Wherever he is, that’s where he is. That’s a gift. He isn’t just present. He’s also a bold Gospel preacher. Unafraid. Unashamed. Unembarrassed. God is raising up preachers like Pastor Landon who believes the God is who He says He is and He will do what He said He would do. That and many other other small things are some of the reasons he’s been blessed on some of the greater things. He’s a great pastor. These are are some of the great reasons. STOP & READ @MichaelHyatt sharing about Robert Wolgemuth will move you. 🥲 My dear friend Robert Wolgemuth went home to be with the Lord this morning. I am grateful he’s safely with Jesus, yet profoundly saddened by his absence. Outside of my wife, Gail, no one has shaped my life more than Robert. We met in 1981 when he hired me as Director of Marketing at Word Publishing—my first real opportunity, despite having zero experience. He took a chance on me that set the trajectory of my entire career. But what marked me most wasn’t the opportunity. It was Robert’s integrity. He hired me at $27,000, though I really needed $30,000. (Remember, this was 1981.) He said if I “crushed it” in the first 90 days, he’d give me the raise. I worked early mornings to late evenings, determined to prove myself. On the 90th day, he called me to his office—but our parent company, ABC/Cap Cities, had imposed a salary freeze. His hands were tied. I went home discouraged but trusting God. The next day, Robert called me back to his office. He handed me an envelope and said, “You can’t refuse this. Bobbie (his then wife) and I prayed about it. We want to give you the difference between the $30,000 I promised and the $27,000 you’re making. I’m committed to being a man of my word.” That moment changed me forever. I’ve told that story in my books and in my speaking to tens of thousands of people over the years. It shaped how I led Thomas Nelson Publishers and how I built Full Focus. Integrity became—and remains—a core value for me, all because of Robert’s example. We worked together through four companies: Word Publishing, Thomas Nelson Publishers, Wolgemuth & Hyatt Publishers, and Wolgemuth & Hyatt Literary Agency. We fought battles together, celebrated wins, endured significant losses. We traveled together, saw movies together, laughed until we couldn’t breathe. We even survived a business meltdown and remained close friends—something I consider a badge of honor for both of us. Our lives eventually took different paths. Robert moved from Nashville to Florida, then to Michigan when he married Nancy. We didn’t see each other as much in recent years, but our friendship never wavered. He never forgot my birthday. We wrote fondly of each other in our books. Those formative years we spent together formed bonds that distance couldn’t break. Two days ago, I left Robert a voicemail telling him I loved him, thanking him for his impact on my life, and reminding him he had finished the race well. I didn’t know those would be my final words to him, but I’m grateful I said them. Robert was a man of quiet humility, gentle strength, and unwavering integrity. He lived his faith in everything he did. He raised my standards, mentored me, and showed me what it means to keep your word no matter the cost. We’ve been praying for Robert these past few weeks. Now he prays for us. May God comfort Nancy, Missy, Julie, their husbands, and all of Robert’s siblings, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. You can be deeply proud—Robert finished well and leaves us all an example worth following. I love you, my old friend. Until we meet again on the other side.
