Census Bureau: Detroit has gained 11,000 residents over the last two years, representing the largest numeric increase in Michigan. The city has now grown by >1% since the 2020 count. Just incredible news, especially considering the situation 10-15 years ago.

I think Zohran's co-opting of efficiency from the right will be seismic for the American socialist project. We need to run a national campaign against The Contractor State—neoliberalism's grand, massively inefficient outsourcing of government functions to private contractors.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

Government must deliver for working people—and every dollar in our budget should work as hard as they do. That’s why I directed every agency to cut waste and help close our budget gap. Here’s some of what we found.

If you or someone you know lives near the Butzel Rec Center, we need more voices in support of the proposed affordable housing next to it. The opposition is organized and the misinformation is extreme!

Really great take. Folks love to talk about a downtown Target or Meijer superstore. What Detroit needs is 3-5 Aldis peppered throughout neighborhoods. A Cass Ave Aldi would clear a downtown grocery megastore.
Dion@2024dion

Aldi runs profitable grocery stores with fresh produce, meat, and dairy sections in some of the poorest neighborhoods of Kansas City, including one where a nonprofit grocer subsidized by the city to fight food deserts recently failed. Aldi is the best solution to food deserts we have, poor cities should be making puppy eyes at Aldi.

We have all the existing infrastructure we need for this, connecting downtowns, universities, tourist destinations etc. Just need to fund operations. Other regions spend billions to construct similar lines from scratch yet ours is almost ready made and just sitting here.

Every time I cross the double tracks at 9 Mile & Hilton I can't believe we don't have a regional Pontiac = Ann Arbor local rail running every 30 minutes.

Kind of an interesting new housing development under construction on the west side of Detroit. Looks like they’re going for a 1930s Nordic functionalism look.

One of the most fascinating things about studying this period of American history is learning about how many awful things spoken about as inevitable events, like this and even manifest destiny more broadly, were actually hotly politically contested and often only barely won.

A new rendering for this planned Midtown Detroit development has been floating around. No word yet from the developer on whether the "Kroger" store is real or only a placeholder.

Red tape is keeping shovels from hitting the dirt. If we want to tackle our housing shortage head on, let’s: 🧾 Create a state-led affordable housing tax credit 🏗️ Demolish nonsensical construction requirements 🏡 Streamline zoning From there, we build, baby, build!

Michigan needs modern, reliable, accessible transportation that connects people, places, and jobs. That’s why I want to work with local communities to build a statewide high-speed rail network to link communities, spur economic growth, and expand access to well-paying jobs and educational opportunities. High-speed rail means stronger connections, less congestion, and a Michigan where everyone can move forward. Read the full story from @BridgeMichigan here ➡️bit.ly/4aPcp3r

What’s the US’s “fourth” city. Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Lansing are pretty clearly the top 3 but the 4th is more ambiguous. I feel like the main contenders are probably Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, Flint, or maybe NYC

The state of Michigan is trying to wrestle zoning control away from local governments to cut the red tape, encourage building and ease the housing shortage. This would eliminate a crucial tool for community gatekeeping and cities are unhappy.
