Please don't do this really. If you're late in getting back respectfully pay the fines. Don't bargain please. The Police had to intervene and then too they're like we got no discount :/ Source: instagram.com/reel/DXHnNp_DP…

@mayukh_panja They do not "lack polish". They do not meet basic standards of decency and civilization, neither do you by defending such behavior.

A lot of Indians working in the West are the first in their bloodline to have made it out of generational poverty. They grew up in remote distant villages far away from the influences of globalization. Now that they are somewhat affluent they bring over their parents to show them around Europe. This is often a matter of immense pride for the family: a sign that they have arrived on the world stage and can afford to do things their forefathers couldn’t have imagined in their wildest dreams. These parents often come from rural areas as poor as sub Saharan Africa. They do not at all understand Western sensibilities, have a completely different sense of what is polite and what is not and are usually extremely terrified and overwhelmed by a world that feels alien. I understand that you find them inconvenient and perhaps even grating. I get it. Their aesthetics stand out. They lack polish and seem out of place in glitzy European airports. Although the glitzy part is increasingly becoming contentious. I sense the condescension in your tweet but remember at the end of the day these people are spending money in Europe, on hotels, food, and souvenirs. They are giving more than they take and it is important to see them as equals and not lesser beings.
WHG baddie@isa2001m

I 100% believe this because the past year or so in I would see Indians arriving at the central train station in Amsterdam or around the airport train station behaving like it was their first day on earth. One example, I saw an Indian woman who was scared to use the escalator, looking at it like she saw water burn, while holding up many people behind her who were trying to exit the train platform.

the reason why emotional intelligence is extremely rare is simply cuz it is expensive. actually modeling another person’s internal state in real time is computationally brutal.. it requires suppressing your own frame, running a parallel simulation, & updating continuously. the “inference costs” of eq in humans are likely much higher than the most expensive ai model in existence today.

2 months in Bangalore and I miss Mumbai. I miss the people. Every small interaction here feels like a negotiation. Auto drivers, packers, old tenants. Everyone’s trying to squeeze something out of you. In Mumbai a cab driver sees it’s hot and just turns on the AC. Here you have to ask for it like it’s a personal favour. That tells you everything.

@GearoidReidy - Not stealing neighbor's unattended packages - Not shoving strangers on train tracks BTW I was mind blown when I first learnt about porch piracy in the US. Richest country in the world and such normalization of petty criminality

Those "ridiculously extreme" public decorum norms include: - not blabbing to your mate on the phone on the train - taking your garbage home with you instead of throwing it on the side of the street The birthrate has *nothing* to do with this unless you also think China and Singapore also have the same norms. Indeed, norms around behavior were much stricter when the birthrate was much higher.
signüll@signulll

japan is a fascinating experiment of a society that simultaneously has some of the most ridiculously extreme public decorum norms on earth & some of the most interesting anon content along with it. they may have optimized so hard for social conformity & reduced coexistence friction that they inadvertently built a culture where the authentic self has nowhere to go except underground. perhaps not having kids is prolly another form of this too.

A relative lost money in some investment scam (more on that later). So when he raised a cybercrime complaint through 1930, a lot of secondary and tertiary accounts to which the amount was layered were frozen immediately. Now, several owners of those accounts (whose phones were apparently hacked) are calling my relative asking him to take back his complaint. The cyber police have literally shared the complaint PDF (which has his name, ph no, address, everything) with these people. Unbelievable! Everyone at home is scared.

When we lived in Morocco, our house was next to one of the country’s top imams. One day, his wife ordered their servants to put out poisoned meat to kill the stray dog we had adopted, vaccinated, and treated with the love it deserved. I really understood their culture after that.

@bond393297 @ChristianHeiens No. Generalizing is critical in these times of info overload. As an Indian myself, blocking Indians has very high upside, almost zero downside. Indian contribution is nearly all trash at best, if not scams and vulgarity

Over the last 24 hours or so, tens of thousands of Americans and Japanese have begun showing up in each other's feeds, and the outcome has been the exact opposite of what happened when Indians began showing up on this site en masse.

@DavidMKeyes Pakistan killing 400 civilians in Kabul hospital got zero coverage or outrage in West. If it was US/UK/Israel, it would have been used to justify mass terror incidents in the West for next 100 years

@Robert_E_Kelly Sounds similar to Fukushima radioactive water release trick that China pulled with Japan, even as China itself releases far more radioactive water in its own adjacent seas. The Chinese frequently ran aggressive SM disinfo campaigns around that as well

This👇is super. It really captures how ridiculous the THAAD fight was. S Korean and Chinese THAAD opponents refused to accept that a terminal defense system couldn't reach high enough to hit CN outbounds in midcourse. Nor would they accept that the curvature of the earth and 1

@CynicalPublius If you're referring to the sinking of IRIS Dena, while apparently well-executed, for a deployed SSN to sink a lone Iranian frigate (with near-zero ASW capability) is not a challenging scenario. Nor would it have been 18 months ago—or any time in the last several decades.

It was just about 18 months ago that the US Navy seemed like it could not get out of its own way--rusty ships sailing into each other, shooting down friendly aircraft, overweight DEI admirals and a sense of a complete loss of mission focus. Yet--today--the US Navy once again looks like the most lethal and efficient naval fighting force since the US fleet that won WWII. Was the initial impression from 18 months ago wrong? Or does great leadership from POTUS and SecWar really make that much of a difference?
