@batcountry1980 @SalvadorDafti @4fHepcat The idea that Brian Wilson is some sort of magnificent rock god is spurious. The Beach Boys are fun but, there's no depth there. Bowie's cover of God Only Knows is the only version that I like. He shows how it should have been.

The guy that started the thread has locked out any answers. Looks like dying on that hill doesn’t extend to people disagreeing with him 🤣 here’s my reply, Mike. The thing with Wilson, and I say this as a fan and someone that knows where his peaks lie, is that his major accomplishment as an album artist begins and ends at Pet Sounds. You pick that, I’ll go Astral Weeks, which I think is leaps ahead of Pet Sounds as an album. But I can totally understand the argument. Pet Sounds is class, even if there is so lesser songs on it. The thing is, once we go beyond that, and you tell me what you think is his second best album, there’s just not a chance that’s it’s getting near Morrison’s second best album. I don’t think there’s any argument there. Van Morrison has a run of incredible albums, and beyond that run he keeps releasing other great albums. Wilson has good albums outwith Pet Sounds, but he’s not got a back catalogue of classics.

@SalvadorDafti @batcountry1980 Dang Dafti. Didn't know I would have to prove my thesis this quickly. Love the guy. Yet, sometimes writers are bound by a rigid idea of a song. Others that love the writer are free to deviate into a space that is not available to the original creator.

Bruce was playing guitar with me on a bunch of the early records. On one session, (producer) Tom Wilson had asked him to play tambourine. And he had this gigantic tambourine. It was like, really big. It was as big as a wagon-wheel. He was playing, and this vision of him playing this tambourine just stuck in my mind. He was one of those characters... he was like that. I don't know if l've ever told him that. I haven't seen him in a long time. I wrote some of the song in New Orleans too. I don't know, different things inspired me...that Fellini movie? What was it? La Strada. It was all sort of like the same thing, you know. Drugs never played a part in that song... 'disappearing in the smoke rings in my mind', that's not drugs, drugs were never that big a thing with me. I could take 'm or leave 'm, never hung me up."

@SalvadorDafti @batcountry1980 Hate me if you want to. Dylan is a great writer but, so many of his songs are best represented by those that saw the genius and gave it better life. Tambourine Man by the Byrds, All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix... shall I go on?
