I think this chart is terrible for an enterprise product.

Sondaki "Go" eki.

good point.. So I'm building Hatched in a different direction. The product carries the Octalysis framework as metadata so the admin sees a live radar of their configured system. Framework is the interface, not a doc. And for enterprise, hands-on design partnership, not "here's the SDK, good luck."

@devneeddev Gamification APIs die when the customer can ship a worse version of it themselves. What stops them?

I'm a solo founder building a thing called Hatched. It's an API that lets product teams add buddy characters, skills, badges and reward shops to their apps without building any of it from scratch. It's early. Last week I read Yu-kai Chou's book Actionable Gamification, the standard reference in the field, and wrote a Reddit post reflecting on it. Yu-kai himself replied. His correction sharpened something I had completely backwards. I had read his book as "Points, Badges, and Leaderboards are the trap, the 8 Core Drives are the alternative." Yu-kai gently pointed out that PBL is NOT the trap. PBL maps to Core Drive 2 (Accomplishment) with a bit of 4, 6, and 8, and those are all valid drives. The trap is sequence. The order he gave: start with the right brain, intrinsic drives. Core Drive 3 (Empowerment of Creativity), 5 (Social Influence), and 7 (Unpredictability and Curiosity). Make the activity fun on its own terms first. THEN layer in extrinsic rewards as multipliers on top of the fun, not as the reason to show up. Compact version: badges are fine as the dessert. They are deadly as the entrée. Here's why this is uncomfortable for me. Two days before he replied, I had audited my own product against the same framework. The result was 34 out of 80, 42%. Where Hatched was strong: Core Drive 2 (8/10) and Core Drive 4 (7/10). Left brain, extrinsic, accomplishment spine. Where it was weakest: CD3 was a 6, CD5 was a 2, CD7 was a 4. The right brain trio. Exactly the drives Yu-kai was pointing at. His reply describes the product I have. I have built the dessert and almost none of the entrée. This changes the roadmap I was about to publish into a sequencing problem, not a feature list. The intrinsic drives can't be Phase 3 features bolted onto an existing extrinsic loop. They have to reframe the first thirty seconds of the experience. The marketplace can't be primarily a place where people spend coins on items, it has to be primarily a place where they express something. Coins follow expression. The hatch moment can't be a badge ceremony, it has to be a curiosity reveal where the user co-creates the buddy with the system. The badge comes after, as recognition of the act of co-creation. The buddy itself can't be a stat bar with a face. It has to be a relationship, or none of the loss aversion mechanics that come later will mean anything. Coins, badges, streaks still ship. They just ride on top of those intrinsic moments now, not underneath them. Build-in-public realization of the week: the most useful single sentence about my product came from a stranger on Reddit who happened to be the person whose book I had just finished reading. Posting the resequenced roadmap once I've stopped re-reading his reply.

It's a great feeling to create a gamified application and reach thousands of users overnight. But what if the gamification engine in the background crashes, and you have to stop developing your main product to keep the system running? This video clearly shows how a developer hit a wall trying to write the 'gamification infrastructure' themselves, and how the project was cancelled Developers and PMs shouldn't have to spend months worrying about things like "how should the streak logic work," "how to protect the database if a user cheats and uses points," or "how to keep the UI and backend synchronized." That's exactly why we built hatched[.]live, as a B2B gamification infrastructure. ⚡ You just send a "lesson_completed" event. ⚡ Hatched handles XP, streaks, locks, and UI animations (within <150ms). Focus on the core value of your product; don't rewrite the retention and gamification infrastructure from scratch. Source: How NOT to make a gamified habit tracker. [YT]

Each badge has criteria attached to events on our gamification engine. Example: lesson_completed x7 with daily streak alive unlocks the ‘7-Day Learner’ badge. Criteria types we support: counters, streaks, skill thresholds, event properties (e.g. score > 90), collections, evolution stage. The setup is AI-assisted: you describe your product (or drop your URL), our agent drafts the events and badge rules, then you refine everything in the dashboard. Feel free to try it on hatched.live. Happy to walk you through a live setup if useful.

🚨 Update: Mini Shai-Hulud supply chain attack is back and hit the TanStack npm ecosystem today. At least 84 packages were compromised in two waves starting at 19:20 UTC. @tanstack/react-router, @tanstack/history, @tanstack/router-core, and dozens more across tens of millions of weekly downloads. This is likely from the same TeamPCP campaign behind the SAP npm compromise two weeks ago. If you ran npm install on any @ tanstack package today, treat your environment as compromised. Rotate GitHub tokens, npm tokens, cloud credentials, and CI secrets immediately. Tanner Linsley confirmed affected versions have been unpublished.
