We study genomics and viral diseases, especially HIV and now feat. COVID-19, and spend a lot of time wondering what makes viruses cause disease.

First day testing van-based, fast-turnaround COVID testing by RT-LAMP. Spit in a tube (h/t @NathanGrubaugh), inactivate for 30 minutes, then RT-LAMP to look for color change. Hoping a version of this could enable twice-weekly testing of teachers to keep schools open.

When SARS-CoV-2 began spreading around the world, graduate students Katarina Braun and Gage Moreno made a quick pivot from studying virus evolution and transmission to sequencing local samples of the virus that causes #COVID19: grad.wisc.edu/2020/06/09/cor…

Certain neighborhoods in #Milwaukee have been disproportionately affected by #COVID19 but lacked viral sequencing to understand their outbreak. @KATarinambraun and I were lucky enough to add 93 sequences to the global tree to begin to understand the #MKE outbreak @dho_lab @tcflab

We've just added 93 new genomes from Wisconsin to nextstrain.org/ncov thanks to @KATarinambraun @GageKMoreno @tcflab @dho_lab @GISAID! New seqs in red. 37 of these cluster together in an introduction that seems related to viruses from Asia and California
