Thrilled to share that I'm joining Gavin Knott's lab (@gavinjknott) at @MonashBDI, @MonashUni as postdoc to explore Archaea-MGE arms race using genomics, biochemistry, and structural biology. Excited to join Monash's vibrant academic community! Let's connect if you're around – looking forward to it! 1/n

@diane_brache Try changing the composition of the media to get rid of these aggregates. Check if you have any salt in the media.

How does one get OD reading when your bacteria grows like this? I have several actinos from eelgrass sediments that do this.

@cosmic_bugg This might work for prepping glycerol stocks. I'm trying to get a good reading in the plate reader.

@diane_brache May be you can use small sterile ceramic/glass pieces during inoculation and incubate them on atleast 120rpm

Xtra info: marine broth in shaker incubator @ 28C. I will have her try some different media. Wondering if switching to plaque assay may be better? I'm helping her cultivate her love of phages while keeping her project in sync with my own work. Phages are not my wheelhouse.

I have a UG student who wants to monitor the growth of the bacterial culture before and after the addition of Mitomycin C to induce prophages. We have 17 actinos I isolated and about 30% make these adorable colored spores.

@sacrebluecarbon Yes, I’ve tried using sterile cotton through a syringe after vortexing in pure water. This does break them up into a homogeneous suspension. BUT, I have an undergrad who needs to do growth curves in a plate reader with it. They will keep growing as balls under those conditions.

@diane_brache Idk about actinos but I know for other organisms changing the salt content of the media can help it grow more planktonicly. V cute regardless

Me, a grown 33 year old man on his birthday: My dad on the phone: “Hola mijo, felicidades y feliz cumpleaños. Te quiero mucho y PORFAVOR PORTATE BIEN!” 😂😂💀 I’ll never escape the “please behave and be polite” rant from my immigrant Mexican parents no matter how old I am 🤣

If becoming an NSF GFRP recipient myself wasn't already amazing, my dope labmate @MacvittieSophia also is a recipient. What an amazing day for #SoginLab ! 🎉
Sophia MacVittie@MacvittieSophia

Feeling incredibly grateful to find out I was awarded a #NSFGRFP this morning!!!! Thanks to all my mentors, friends, and family who helped make this possible. Can’t wait to dig into more #Aiptasia research with @MaggieSogin and start my PhD at UC Merced this fall!

So proud of what @diane_brache & I accomplished for our first of four field sample collections!! As I said earlier it was a trial collection... If it all failed it was fine. First day we learned a LOT, made notes, changed some methods (1/2)

@yournameisvalid I’ve had colleagues with hyphenated names were the publisher messes the order of the name. Makes it difficult to search for their pubs. They end having 3 or 4 versions of their name which is a pain. It happens to me already at banks, credit card and dr offices etc already.
