Carolina won't be trading for defense. You are correct Chatfield is in over his head, but that can be fixed by simply re-configuring the guys you already have.

Something interesting about this trade deadline is there do seem to be more right-handed defenseman available than usual. Considered a premium position, some names believed to be available include Dougie Hamilton, Justin Faulk, Tyler Myers, Luke Schenn, Rasmus Ristolainen, Connor Murphy, Andrew Peeke. Call me crazy, call me bias, I still think Nicky Schmaltz should’ve been at least under consideration for Team USA. There will always be snubs. There will always be great players left off the list. The reported "interest" Carolina has in Dougie Hamilton is mostly just the team saying "yeah he could fit". There is no real path towards acquiring the player. And the result would be Nikishin to the press box, so I have been told very low chance it happens. You think about what the return would probably be and you start to realize the same things the Canes' FO has. Slavin, Ghost, Miller, Walker and Nikishin all will not be moved. They were willing to move Nikishin for Hughes because he is a top ten player in the league. That is the "bar" in terms of what they would move him for. They aren't including him in a deal for an overpaid, declining Hamilton. Rightfully so. Chatfield is the guy they could probably live without, but he has a full NMC. And there is zero desire internally to tarnish that relationship by asking him to waive it. So any deal for Hamilton is likely just futures going the other way. Which may not even be enough for NJ to send him to a divisional rival. Anyways, the result would be Nikishin being the odd man out because you know Rod would want to get back to 3LHD/3RHD in the lineup. He isn't scratching Miller, Ghost or a healthy Slavin. Case in point, I would fade the rumors that Carolina has "serious" interest in acquiring any defenseman this season. Unless someone suffers a season-ending injury, the corps is pretty set for reasons listed above.
