⚖️ History has a long memory. On 17 March, a Brussels court will decide whether former Belgian diplomat Étienne Davignon (93) should stand trial over the chain of events that led to the 1961 murder of Patrice Lumumba 🇨🇩 For decades Belgium acknowledged only “moral responsibility.” But morality without accountability leaves history unfinished. For many Congolese, this moment is not about a 93-year-old man — it’s about whether colonial crimes can ever truly face justice, no matter how long it takes. Justice delayed should not mean justice denied. ✊🏾 africa-confidential.com/article/id/159…

This is the sort of humiliation that should ignite an aggressive push to end aid dependency once and for all. For how long must the Continent’s peoples and nations depend on the fickle generosity of strangers?

Nigeria's authorities were warned of gunmen arriving in large numbers, and terrorists' threats. Yet they failed to prevent the two biggest massacres of the past year – in Yelwata and Woro. with @saiks2 @ismaaga6 and Dickson Adama. nytimes.com/2026/03/03/wor…

"A military takeover in Guinea-Bissau and an attempted coup in Benin are the latest tests for ECOWAS. But it is the ever-spreading Sahel security crisis that remains the greater challenge for regional leadership." ➡️Read our latest piece @ChathamHouse: bit.ly/49684Ja

This is the first time that China has agreed such a currency conversion. Ethiopia’s move to initiate talks with Beijing on converting its debt suggests others may follow Kenya's lead. Read @FergusKell's (@AfricaProg) latest analysis⤵️ chathamhouse.org/2025/11/kenyas…

Worrisome development in #Tigray. Force commanders from both the #TPLF and the #ENDF have also recently made unmasked threats against each other—time to act before it's too late. #Ethiopia
Getachew Temare@getachew_temare

#Ethiopia: The situation in #Tigray appears to be sliding back toward war. Two escalatory developments are driving this fear. First, armed clashes have erupted between Tigray security forces and a splinter faction known as the “Tigray Peace Forces.” Unlike previous skirmishes, the latest confrontation has reportedly intensified into a full offensive involving heavy weaponry—signaling a dangerous internal fragmentation with profound security implications. Second, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Finance has instructed the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia to withhold nearly 2 billion ETB that was recently allocated to Tigray’s administration. This move, beyond its administrative veneer, functions as an act of economic coercion that could further destabilize the region and erode trust in the federal-regional relationship. These developments unfold against a wider climate of militarized rhetoric between Eritrea and Ethiopia, with both governments trading hostile narratives and engaging in war-preparatory propaganda. Disturbingly, there are also growing indications that segments of Tigray’s leadership are seeking alignment with Eritrea—an actor overwhelmingly implicated in the atrocities committed during the previous war. The convergence of internal fragmentation, federal economic pressure, and renewed cross-border tensions creates a volatile environment in which miscalculations can rapidly trigger large-scale conflict. The region stands at a critical crossroads, where decisions made in the coming days could determine whether Tigray reenters another destructive war or finds a path to stability
