Like many Portuguese, I often find myself wondering:
"What is the major problem with Portugal?" 🤔 🇵🇹
We have a charming country, with fantastic weather, intelligent, cheerful, and sociable people, and we're situated at the center of three continents. 🌍
But why are we economically weak? 💸
I've had several theories: employers are exploiters and don't want to pay their employees properly, the politicians are corrupt, the taxes are excessively high... 🏢💰
But recently, I've come to the conclusion that all these "problems" are not the cause, but rather the consequence of a bigger issue.
So, what is the real issue? I realized that the problem is not corruption or the greed of employers.
The problem is deeper and relates to our labor culture.
In Portugal, we tend not to encourage people to think innovatively or critically. 💭
It's as if the rule is: "join the company, do as you're told, and don't question."
Those who try to innovate or question are usually not well-regarded. ❌
The difference I noticed in Germany was striking. There, I questioned everything, even as the newest and most inexperienced. Instead of disapproving looks, I received support and encouragement. 🇩🇪👏
At the company where I worked, they highly value feedback, both positive and constructive. I was happy when someone appreciated my work, but sometimes even happier to receive constructive criticism, which clearly indicated how I could improve. 👍📈
Regarding systemic corruption, a glaring example in Portugal is the common question "with or without invoice?". We all know that "without invoice" usually means cheaper, but also less legal. It's a common practice, but not exactly correct. 🧾❓
Here, we often know that something isn't working well, but it seems we are stuck in a vicious cycle: things are this way because they always have been. And this is poisonous to innovation and progress. 🚫
It's easier to circumvent the law than to change it... ⚖️
In Germany, I realized that rules are respected because people trust that they have a purpose. And if they disagree with something, they question it and try to change it.
A perfect example of this happened in Düsseldorf during the COVID-19 pandemic. They implemented a rule requiring the use of masks outdoors, even when no one else was around. The public revolted, questioned the effectiveness of this measure, and, surprisingly, the rule was revoked in a few days. 😷
Therefore, what we need is a change in mindset. 💡
We have many inefficient processes and senseless rules that could be easily rectified if we encourage citizens/workers to be part of the change. 🔄

As a Vice President at Microsoft I always ask interviewees if they have a strong opinion about folks who ask them if they care about coding fonts. Then I have those folks stop interviewing my candidates.

As a Staff level engineer, I always ask interviewees if they have a strong preference on coding fonts. If they do, they go right in the bin. Focus your energy on what matters
