Hard to say when the Phantom Taxman first appeared, sightings of her first took place weeks after the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Conflicting sightings pin the creature in multiple locations all at once, making many researchers suggesting it being metaphysical in nature.

Can we stop with all this bs propaganda pretending like there wasn't a world of kids making flash animations, game mods, indies, writing short stories & fan fics, making home movies, sketching in their notepad in the classroom. AI has never been needed for creativity.

So here’s my 2c I’ve said before that people need to get off Pinterest and Artstation when collecting reference. So many games look “generic” because concept art has become self referencing and inbred. I always advocate for finding your own primary reference. So back to AI. I hate seeing AI in mood boards. It’s of no value to me. There’s no culture, no consideration, no material reference. If I go to a museum, I see objects that expand my understanding of human creativity and production. AI can’t even get wood knurling right. Concept artists get shit for looking at other artists. But when we do that we can understand the other artist and their work. There’s a story behind the craft. We can see the individual ingredients and adopt only what we need. With AI we see only mush. As an extreme example I design guns. AI does not understand how guns work. How they’re machined. The details are lost. What it provides is nothing I can learn more about. To someone who knows nothing about guns you might be fooled enough into believe it’s correct. Your knowledge is now tainted. It’s a poor facsimile and it’s disappointing to see AI being used this way. I actually think using it to render concept is more acceptable than this, as at least the important part, the idea, is human. Whereas rendering could just also be done with photo bashing or whatever. Either way Larian communicated this poorly.

Holy fuck guys we’re not "pushing hard" for or replacing concept artists with AI. We have a team of 72 artists of which 23 are concept artists and we are hiring more. The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do. I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists. We use AI tools to explore references, just like we use google and art books. At the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we replace with original concept art. There is no comparison. I talked about how we use ML here if you would like to know more: gamespot.com/articles/baldu… We've hired creatives for their talent, not for their ability to do what a machine suggests, but they can experiment with these tools to make their lives easier.

I have to add my voice to the chorus: there is nothing more insulting, disempowering, or a surer sign that you’re working with hacks (& there are many, wedged into middle management in AAA) than receiving an AI moodboard as a concept artist, and I need to talk about it

I find what's being unsaid here disturbing: the reason removing em-dashes from ChatGPT responses is a "win" that is worthy of an announcement is that em-dashes are primarily used to sniff out if a published work was written by ChatGPT. What purpose does this serve except to more covertly pass off AI writing as human writing? If people didn't care that an article etc was AI generated, why would this sort of thing be worthy of a dedicated announcement? An argument I've seen is that writers who frequently use em-dashes in their work are wrongly being accused of using ChatGPT, and this is a step toward mitigating that. But this is a smokescreen that functions on the assumption that people are only upset when they can see the cracks and are otherwise indifferent to AI writing if they can't tell the difference. The truth of this sneakily insidious announcement is that it is a declaration not only that ChatGPT's designers are aware that people do not want to read things written by AI, but also that ChatGPT functions better as a product when it deceptively hides its fingerprints. Were AI designers fine with laws or industry standards requiring disclosure around the use of AI, this seemingly innocuous fix wouldn't have even crossed Mr. Altman's mind to announce. In fact, if disclosure was a standard, writers would not be accused of using AI in the first place; the simple omission of "written using AI" from their work would be enough.
Sam Altman@sama

Small-but-happy win: If you tell ChatGPT not to use em-dashes in your custom instructions, it finally does what it's supposed to do!

🙃To explain how accurate @maximilian_ is about how big studios sometimes slow game development down (compared to @expedition33's small scale) here’s what it CAN take to add simple change to a main character at a mega studio: 1. Art Director requests new shoulder pad and half cape on main character, after I finish her. 2. Meeting with Rigging to check skeleton compatibility. They ask me to make a proxy model. 3. Animation team flags issues with existing animations - now keyframes need tweaking or re-baking to fit new shoulder pad. Meeting to discuss. 4. Tech Anim request a meeting. need to reschedule new time to add cloth sim, and make it work across future skins. 5. Design request a pause. New shoulder pad means new hitbox collisions needed for melee. Eventually they agree its okay in meeting. 6. QA has to regression test the whole thing across gameplay and cutscenes. Make sure it doesn't look stupid from all scenarios. 7. Cinematics request meeting with me and Art Director. They're worried it’ll block the character’s face in key scenes. Ask me to make it smaller. 8. Narrative/Localization double-check if any lines reference the old outfit. 9. I finally finish the cape and shoulder pad - looks good. Cloth simulation and everything. 10. Marketing BLOCKS IT - because not enough time to get it into the upcoming pre-rendered Game Awards trailer. 👉Shoulder Pad & Cape: created & cut.

I know @NightSkyKing_ has been banging this drum forever and this tweet is just one example… …but this clip from @maximilian_ last night really made it all click for me on what he’s been trying to say about the state of game development and why Expedition 33 is so important.
