“According to aviation insider JonNYC, he then continued working alone for over an hour after the crash, guiding remaining planes back to their gates because there was no one to relieve him until morning.”
Sam Antha@SamanthaLives1

Minutes after the Air Canada CRJ-900 collided with a fire truck on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport last night, killing both pilots, the air traffic controller's voice was captured on LiveATC audio. "That wasn't good to watch," a voice is heard saying on the frequency. The controller replies: "Yeah, I know. I was here. I tried to reach out. We were dealing with an emergency earlier. I messed up." The other voice responds: "Nah man, you did the best you could," according to Newsweek and CBC News. The controller had been working alone, handling both ground and tower operations. A United Airlines flight had aborted takeoff due to a warning light and a cabin odor that sickened the flight attendants. The controller cleared a fire truck to cross Runway 4 to reach the United plane. Seconds later, he realized Air Canada Flight 8646 was still rolling down the same runway after landing, according to CNN. "Stop, stop, stop, Truck 1, stop!" he shouted. It was too late. After the collision, the controller ordered an approaching Delta flight to go around, closed the runway, and called in additional emergency vehicles. According to aviation insider JonNYC, he then continued working alone for over an hour after the crash, guiding remaining planes back to their gates because there was no one to relieve him until morning.

A concrete mound blamed for the deadly 2024 Jeju Air Flight 2216 crash at Muan International Airport was found to have been built to save construction costs, the state auditor said today. The mound was raised near the end of the runway at the airport, located approximately 290 kilometers (180 miles) south of Seoul, to support a localizer, which sends signals to help aircraft find the middle of the runway. On Dec. 29, 2024, Jeju Air Flight 2216 from Bangkok crashed into the structure after making a belly landing, killing 179 passengers and crew members on board. To save construction costs of reshaping the terrain, a concrete mound was built to raise the localizer above the runway, the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) said. The auditor also found that the Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) demanded a review of the mound's construction in 2007 after it was approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2003 without a risk assessment. However, no changes were made. As part of a modernization project between 2019 and 2024, the KAC reinforced the mound at Muan and similar structures at four other airports, according to the BAI. In total, 14 localizer structures at eight airports were found to have been built without meeting the necessary standards, it said.

The latest search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which went missing 12 years ago in one of aviation's greatest enduring mysteries, concluded in January without yielding any findings, Malaysia's transport ministry said today. The Boeing 777 carrying 239 people vanished from radar screens on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Two-thirds of the passengers were Chinese, while the others included Malaysians, Indonesians and Australians, as well as Indian, American, Dutch and French nationals. Despite multiple searches, including the largest in aviation history, neither the aircraft, passengers nor black boxes have ever been found. In an attempt to locate the aircraft, Ocean Infinity deployed autonomous underwater drones capable of diving to depths of up to 6,000 metres (20,000 feet). The company conducted previous unsuccessful searches in 2018, as did Australia for three years until January 2017.
