A DSA endorsement wouldn’t have changed anything. The only way a pro working class candidate could win this billionaire heavy district is by winning NYCHA residents. Layla got them all, and they ranked no one else, bc no other candidate opposed the planned demo of their homes.

Ground game combined with endorsement is how you defeat well funded establishment candidates. A DSA endorsement alongside an early endorsement from zohran would have changed the outcome. Linsay boylan was polling last at 10% before zohran last minute endorsement boosted her to second place.

“Build stuff” vs “not build stuff,” is a laughably reductive frame. What is the “stuff?” Public hospitals? Mitchell Lama co-ops? A massive surveillance system? A cop city? A cartoon fruit AI show? “I want STUFF! Any STUFF!” I get why billionaires do this but socialists?
arne ness@arne__ness

“if it can be built, it must be built” is a dictum a socialist society would reject. warped view of “progress” masking the aimlessness of capital accumulation. to be in control of our collective social being implies acting purposefully in accordance with natural-historical limits

@sfali789 @bhargreaves @CarlMichaelW @laylaLawGisiko Why? Mamdani knows that those Elliot Chelsea houses gotta go too. They’re mold infested and literally crumbling. It’s people like Layla who want to see them rot in deplorable conditions. While they deserve the very best and that’s new apartments.

Lots of takes on NYC council election tonight, but here's my view living in the district: Boylan had ~no local presence, and it's no surprise she lost. Only question is why Mamdani tried to intervene at a late hour. But @CarlMichaelW's trouncing of @laylaLawGisiko is the real story here, a sharp repudiation of NIMBY politics in one of the wealthiest districts in the country. Lib or progressive, we're much better for tonight's outcome.

@MarkLevineNYC How does fighting to save public housing make you a NIMBY Mark? I genuinely don’t understand why the establishment believes that in order to build more affordable housing (which we ALL agree on btw) we need to demolish existing affordable housing.

Maybe not the biggest take-away of this race, but don’t miss that an unabashed pro-housing candidate took on an intense wave of nimby opposition and won big—in a district that includes the West Village, Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen etc. Latest sign that we are in a new era of housing politics in NYC.

.@CarlMichaelW poured his heart and soul onto this campaign and the voters of D3 responded by giving him a resounding victory tonight. Congrats to a soon-to-be star of the NY City Council.

DSA ought to realize that in order to fight the housing crisis, it needs to INCLUDE public housing tenants. NYCHA tenants voted for Layla to save their homes. No other campaign/candidate stood by them like Layla has.
Kate Willett@katewillett

Almost all of Layla’s support came from NYCHA and her supporters didn’t rank anyone else, bc no one else in this race would oppose the demolition of their homes. A lack of solidarity with NYCHA tenants over Related Companies/YIMBY’s had a high price for Zohran tonight.

@bhargreaves @CarlMichaelW @laylaLawGisiko The nimby matter makes little sense to me. Keep the deplorable conditions or build new apartments where the current residents can move into when built. My guess is many of the NYCHA residents disagreed, but I do not live in the district, so I don't really know.

@bhargreaves @CarlMichaelW @laylaLawGisiko Mamdani should have endorsed Layla Law-Gisilko. Not only would this have been MUCH more ideologically aligned with his radical political roots, it would have demonstrated solidarity with the district's most vulnerable, namely NYCHA tenants, instead of YIMBYs & Related Companies

@thegreatpmurs @fuelgrannie Abundance perpetuated a narrative that Layla is anti-housing, when she was the only candidate who has been relentless in the fight against the demolition of FEC with the tenants. You don build more housing by destroying existing affordable housing

Canvassing outside of Hells Kitchen Manhattan Plaza with @laylaLawGisiko and super canvassers Diego @digifigs_1 & Moriko, having an amazing time speaking with any voters who are ranking @laylaLawGisiko FIRST! Voters want to see a woman lead District 3, and one with policies to save public housing, halt gentrification on steroids, save small businesses and keep healthcare for retirees! I am running for City Council in district 3, Hell‘s kitchen, Chelsea, and the West Village. Our district is at a crossroads: NYCHA, Penn Station, Hudson yards; who gets to stay, and who gets pushed out. I am running to be a fearless voice for tenants, workers, and neighbors
