Beyond simply competing with China (and the rest do the world), LLMs are not the only technologies that need compute. What is up with training medical models that we can use to fight cancer (segmentation, molecular modeling)? That is no longer a goal we care about?

bernie sanders sat down with claude (voice mode, haiku, aka the dumb one), asked it the scariest possible questions about AI, and claude said scary things back. because that's what it does! it is a helpful chatbot his response is a moratorium on data centers. it won't pass. but if it did, all you've done is freeze american compute while china keeps building. they're already shipping incredible open source models trained on stolen american research at a fraction of the cost. no one over there is pausing. i genuinely do not know when these people will figure this out

So I wrote a post saying what’s happening in the West Bank is apartheid, and then Shai Davidai responded, and his “gotcha” argument for why it’s not apartheid is that actually Jews and Palestinians live apart from each other. Hmmm, I wonder how one might say “apart” in Afrikaans.

Doctors are manually operating ventilators in order to keep babies alive in Cuba. The U.S. is laying siege cruelly cut off all fuel, power is out, leaving hospitals without electricity. Dialysis patients, babies in NICU, and others will die. This’s a crime against humanity.
