It reflects life. It could come out of nowhere. I honestly think that could act as a really interesting reflection of reality.

If it’s a serious subject, wouldn’t it hit readers hard to very suddenly find out a character has done something like rape or murder? Lack of preparation can be for entertainment’s sake, too.

Most importantly: If an author decides to suddenly include a serious topic like rape or incest, it’s because they want the reader to be shocked…
