Very sad to hear about of the death of Jack Vettriano, one of Scotland most popular artists of modern times. His most famous work, The Singing Butler, set a Scottish record when it sold for £750,000 in 2004. Even now it remains one of the best-selling prints in Europe.

Happy Heavenly 299th birthday to General Hugh Mercer, born 16 January 1726 in Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire. The former Jacobite surgeon fled the horrors of Culloden & its aftermath to become an American hero of the independence revolution & was killed in the Battle of Princeton 1777

Happy 90th birthday to Scots-American Elvis Presley whose 6x great-grandfather Andrew Presley, a blacksmith from Lonmay, Aberdeenshire, emigrated to North Carolina in 1745 to begin the American branch of the family.

Happy 143rd Birthday to Top Scot Sir Alexander Fleming. Born on 6 August 1881 in Darvel, Ayrshire. His discovery of penicillin in 1928 is estimated to have saved more 200million lives worldwide.

On 6 August 1678 the first Glasgow to Edinburgh coach service began from White Horse Inn, Edinburgh. Given the average speed of a coach was around 5mph it would have taken all day. Sometimes, when there’s problems on the M8 it feels like it still does. Plus ça change.
