On comedians and speech, I would note that the entire point of comedy is often to shake things up by causing offense. I give comedians wide latitude because I don’t think it’s unhealthy to provoke debate through comedy. The whole trigger warning PC trend was widely regarded on the right as pretty much killing comedy. Culture became very unfunny. The great comedians go after sacred cows. And before you all fill up my comment thread with statements about how “Kimmel made a non-factual statement” and “his employer has a right to not be attached to it,” I already know those arguments and this post is not solely about Kimmel but rather a general statement about comedians and cancel culture being directed at them. I would also acknowledge that there is a marketplace argument (what the market will bear) present with a talk show host that doesn’t exist in the same way with a professor, teacher or nurse etc. I recognize that conservatives have felt their speech suppressed for so long that there is, for many, a momentary catharsis in taking that power back. It still doesn’t obscure my point. I’m just trying to get people to pause and think. Sharpen your arguments. You can come down where you want on the issue at the end of the day.
