The Psychological Cost of Trading: A Personal Story This is something I’ve been meaning to share for a long time. If someone finds it relatable, useful, or just worth reading — I’ll be glad Mentally, I haven’t been in a stable place for a long time: – depression (4+ years) – unwanted thoughts that come and go, sometimes daily – emotional swings – bursts of irritation for no reason – long-term social withdrawal – moments of inner breakdowns, when I feel lost and emotionally paralyzed I started getting into trading three years ago, and have been trading consistently for the past two. While digging into myself, I asked — was it trading that pushed me into this extremely heavy internal state? The answer is both yes and no. Trading fully revealed me, became a mirror of what was already inside. But it amplified and brought everything to the surface, triggering states that had previously been hidden, suppressed, or compensated by other things. It intensified my nature, but didn’t create it. Depression, at the very least, had been there for a long time. I’ve always had detachment, breakdowns, anxiety, difficulties with the social part — that was all there before trading. Trading became a litmus test that exposed it all and stripped away my defense mechanisms. Yes, it intensified everything — unwanted thoughts as the extreme form of depression. I chose trading for many objective reasons, and the choice was justified. But having reached a level where trading no longer forgives weaknesses — the internal configuration turned out to be the weak link in the long-term game. Lack of inner core — that’s something that won’t let you move forward under any conditions. A natural stage, especially if someone has a weak nature or never had life conditions where it could be developed at a high level. The inner core is how a person shows up under pressure, when there’s no external support. It’s a mix of character, willpower, and a certain view of oneself. It’s not something you can read about and gain — it’s something that grows through specific reactions: how you act when it hurts, when it’s scary, when there’s temptation to quit — but you don’t. For one person, it’s expressed in physical strength and the ability to withstand pressure in an aggressive environment. For another — in the ability not to fall apart under emotional pressure, to keep rhythm, structure, and take responsibility for decisions. When it’s absent — a person wavers, gets lost, lives by reactions. They might understand a lot, but they can’t hold their ground. Without a core, discipline becomes a short-term effort, strategy — just theory, decisions — impulsive. No matter how much I focus on the technical side, the system can always be learned, rebuilt, adapted. But psychology is a lot more complicated. I had enough resilience to reach a certain level — decent results by general standards, though short-term. After that — performance dropped, and I started spiraling mentally. Wrong behavior patterns, habits formed over months, went way too deep. I ended up in a loop of pullbacks and internal stagnation, and to get out of it — a systemic reboot is needed. When it comes to psychological burnout, no trading system will save you. It’s crucial to recognize this early and start rebuilding. First, need to build a sustainable recovery system: burnout is a dangerous professional trap. Second, it’s important to compensate for emotional dependency. For example, riding a motorcycle, etc. Third — building a system of principles. That’s the foundation, which gives not just understanding, but from it I can already detect behavioral mistakes and make the right decisions. And finally, physical training and healthy sleep — are an inseparable part of psychological stability. Body and psyche are directly linked: workouts harden the mind and work as therapy, sleep restores focus and clarity. Below are my peak results in the @fundingpips account during May–June 2024. @Khldfx 🤝
