As a devout Catholic, she requested a religious exemption, explaining her sincere belief that human life begins at conception and that the vaccines (at the time) were developed or tested using fetal cell lines from abortions, which conflicted with her faith’s teachings on abortion. She cited the Bible and provided supporting information, including from her priest. She sued BCBSM for religious discrimination under Title VII, alleging the company denied her accommodation request without proper engagement, placed her on unpaid leave, and terminated her. The case was Domski v. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The jury found in her favor and awarded: $10 million in punitive damages (for malicious or reckless conduct). $1.7 million in lost wages (back pay and front pay). $1 million in noneconomic damages (emotional distress/pain and suffering). Total: ~$12.69–12.7 million.
