Navigating the streets of Kampala can be quite perilous at times. Many areas lack adequate lighting or have no sidewalks for pedestrians to use. Today, my walk guest and I encountered both of these issues while trying to reach a quieter part of the city. At one point, we found ourselves standing right at the edge of the road, inches away from a trench, to avoid a massive truck speeding by! We both breathed a huge sigh of relief once the truck had passed. This experience sparked a discussion between us about road safety, public policy advocacy, and ways to encourage leaders to prioritize pedestrian accessibility in our city. It’s a challenging endeavor, but as we both acknowledged, it's a necessary undertaking. I first met @dltum when he provided light and sound at my book launch in July 2024. It was during today’s conversation that I discovered his extensive background in the social protection field. Naturally, I was curious about how he transitioned into sound. “I’ve always had a passion for music,” he shared. “Growing up, my mother always had a radio on in whatever room she occupied. We had radios scattered throughout the house. My mom's love for music clearly influenced me.” His passion for music led him to start a collection and to earn some money as a DJ at student parties during his time at university. He continued this as a side gig, but it became more serious after a speaker visited NSSF to discuss financial security. The speaker advised the staff, “NSSF isn’t your mother. You need to learn to stand on your own.” For him, music and sound became the foundation upon which he stood. In addition to his talents as a DJ, David played a crucial role in developing and promoting national scale up of government social protection initiative known as SAGE-Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment . He dedicated a decade to this endeavor, gaining invaluable insight along the way. He learned the art of negotiation, how to garner support from across the political spectrum, and deployed storytelling as an impactful tool for change. David has mastered the intricacies of constructing effective social protection systems. He also knows how to elevate any event with his DJ talent, no matter the occasion. #WalkTalkConnect
